Yep, and everyone said dreamcast was going to blow away PS1. Admittedly it was a more powerful console and had better games, but which prevailed because of popularity, not potential?

Who said that? Sega never toppled anyone. Even the success of Genesis was short lived. Popularity and 100% HW support is what will drive XBox+PC gaming to levels that Sony could ever dream of.

X-Box is just a striped down PC, in which I would rather have full blown PC that can do other things than play games. Competition is good; besides everything will be integrated in the new future, so arguing now which console is better is pointless.

The thing is it comes at a stripped down price. GeForce3 equipped at $300, cheaper than PS2 with BB. Not everyone has $1,500 to drop building a PC.
