Ok.
Let's go with a "basic" set up.
Two factions: town, mafia.
Goal of game
if mafia = kill all town
if town = kill all mafia.
Teams are usually 75/25 town/mafia.
two phases: day, night
day = discussion between all parties. town doesn't know who other town players are. mafia does. mafia can communicate privately (PMs, used to use off-site forums) goal is to analyze people's posting, argue a bunch and ultimately lynch (kill) a player. This takes a 50%+1 majority. at the lynch, night begins.
night = town does nothing unless they have a "power role" two simple examples: doc = guy who can specify a person to protect from night kills by mafia. cop = guy specifies a person to a mod and gets to know if they are town or mafia. mafia communicates and sends a name to the moderator to be killed.
day break = moderator reveals any public night action such as who got dead and reveals their role.
rinse repeat.
