Re: A Game of Thrones - Season 2 TV (Premiere Sunday April 1st)

said by bionicRod:

A little background: GRRM was writing book 4....and writing...and writing...and eventually it got too big to be one book. So he quite literally took half of the characters out of it and continued their stories in book 5. Book 5 starts at the same time as book 4, only with the other half of the characters. So they are essentially two halves of the same book.

So does this mean book 5 essentially starts at the same time as book 4? Or does it continue (timeline-wise) from the end of book 4?

So did you pay the gold or the iron price for that book?

It starts at the same time book 4 did.

They are essentially in the same time line, with book 4 focusing on one side of the cast, and book 5 on the other. The exact split is book 4, King's Landing, Riverlands, The Eyrie, Iron Islands, Dorne, The Citadel, and The East. Book 5, The Wall, The Free Cities, Seven Kingdoms, Far East. Some overlap, but basically the same time period for both books.

OK. imo that was retarded. I would rather he split it up timeline -wise. Because right now I feel like there was a bunch of stuff I wanted to see what happened next not read a book where I feel several characters are just sitting on their thumbs doing nothing. Oh well, just incentive to finish up book4 so I can read book 5.

Reading them back to back, without the 5 year waiting period, will help a lot. That way it's like one big book with the first half focusing on one group and the second half on the other.

Except book 5 goes past the timeline of book 4 by several chapters.

Mostly to me book 4 was the "Son of a... If I read one more Cersei chapter I'm going to vomit" book. I enjoyed Book 5 much more.

Maybe HBO will combine books 4 and 5 and take three TV seasons to present all of it.
