DavesnothereNo-BHELL-ity DOES have its Advantages join:2009-06-15 START&Cogeco kudos:6 1 edit | Phantom PING Apprehended ! Yes, folks, the notorious 'Phantom PING', who terrorized the Cogeco Ontario Aggregated POI to the tune of about 20 extra milliseconds of latency for the past few weeks, was quietly taken into custody and disarmed by a specially assigned covert IT sting team.
As a result, the ping now to be expected for those subscribers using Nexicom's Toronto server on a Start thru Cogeco account is once again 20ms or lower.
Neither Start nor Cogeco reps have responded to our requests for an interview at the time this article went to press.
However, all is well.
Next is a sample of the good stats.
Here we go, at 3:30 PM EDT :

START's 16/1 profile over an Eastern Ontario Cogeco feed, D3 Modem.
Upstream should be a tad faster, but there was about 160Mbps of other traffic at same time as test.

bt join:2009-02-26 canada kudos:1 | I'll have to check my Rogers-area connection tonight. I was about 20 ms higher than I had been on Rogers as well. |

To Kanata (which Rogers tested against for the server auto-select):

The most amusing thing of all is that I ran this test over wifi. |

This is from the Petawawa area to the Oakville server. I think I am only on 14/1 as thats the highest they offer here right now. |

Ping may be lower.
@ BT, I'm not sure that the Phantom had an evil cousin who was robbing the Rogers zones.
But that's decent enough ping nonetheless.
And you are on the 18/.5 plan ? |

And you are on the 18/.5 plan ? Yeah, I think I got tricked by the Speedtest.net auto-selected server in regards to ping. It selected Hamilton which tested around 40ms, and still does, while Toronto tests at 19ms.
On Toronto and Ottawa test servers, I get around the same ping as I did with Rogers. Probably would have been true for the Hamilton servers as well.
Yes, I'm on the 18/0.5 plan. |

It seems to ignore a farther server altogether, purely based on perceived distance by IP registrant, regardless of actual ping.
I'm in Eastern ON and if I let it choose FOR me, it most often picks Kitchener, as my IP is registered to START in London.
When with TSI, that & many other geolocating sites had thought that I was in Chatham - funny enough.
And when with GOUGEco, it usually picked Kanata (near Ottawa), which must mean that Cogeco has their IPs organized into sub-pools by area.

The powers of good have triumphed, and the 'Phantom PING' has once again been brought to justice.
Good work, all who were involved, and let's hope that he does not escape custody of the 'Network Sandbox' again ! |
