Re: [Internet] Any speed increases on the horizon?

Well specifically for me, I have a vpn setup on my home connection. I use it primarily for streaming about 8TB of high resolution music (24-bit/192khz studio recordings). With the 5mb upload it is not enough to play these files in VLC without first having to copy them over to the machine i am working on. I also use dropbox extensively. Naturally with 5mbps upload it takes forever to synchronize large changes. With file sizes today becoming larger and larger, especially with personal hd video recordings, 5mbps is really laughable. While brighthouse's customer service is definitely far superior to verizon's (at least when i live in the tampa bay area), i feel as though users that absolutely want/need the higher upload speeds will jump ship anyways. Unfortunately for me now, brighthouse is the only decent option in the Orlando area. Fios will probably never happen here.

Also, currently with the current upstream config (4 bonded qam-16 channels @ 2560 baud), it allows for 40.960 mbps upstream on any given node. Any chance of getting 64-qam or even 256 qam on the upstream side, or is the return path too noisy for this to happen?

You didn't really think that your 24-bit/192khz audio or HD Video thing was gonna sway me did you? This justifcation along with "all I do is upload linux distros" and all sorts of stuff has been used by those very few trying to make their case for higher upstream datarates for ages. But at the end of the day most aren't engaged in the above activities anyway (they may be doing p2p but it isn't what they claim). And we both know that so lets not play games here

For those that don't know what this poster is "streaming" amounts to about 4.6mbps (up no less) whereas the usual CD or high quality audio stream is a mere fraction of this. Honestly why would you STREAM audio like this? Let's be real here...it sounds like you fall into the NV class of person. No reasonable person would stream audio at those sample rates for a whole host of reasons (especially if you are sharing with the masses and sending it up to shoutcast server somewhere - your hosting fees would outrageously high and your audience very small).

If you have a business need you do have options from us right now that can help with this. On the flip side if you are doing this because of some audiophile gone crazy fantasy that you will enjoy your mobile music better think again. (Lets not even begin to talk about the overage charges incurred if you are streaming to a mobile device....geesh...unless of course you are one of those sitll on an unlimited plan in which case you would fall into a gross abuser category and rightfully so).

The VPN experience...sure..I can see that having to use VPN for what I do. But the other deal just seems like an excuse to me to justify your original post and not at all a realistic expectation of a residential internet connection.

HD recording streaming claim falls flat as Netflix (highest quality 3.8mbps) and several others stream well under that datarate with no problems. And no most people aren't streaming HD content from their home network. There are those slingbox guys (1.5mbps +)and a couple of others but in reality not that big a of a deal for most people and those that need it can do it just fine with 5mpbs up.

As for the dropbox again I see that but how often are you placing things in dropbox that are huge (dont include your audio stuff because that whole idea is suspect to me).

Remember my last post said average every day Joe here...your use is by no means average, everyday or even close to Joe and in reality isn't a good idea anyway.

All said I'm not trying to deny anyone upstream increases as I'm one who could genuinely use 10mbps or more but generally speaking the average guy isn't and won't be using near that for some time in the future.

As for the rest of the world will there be exceptions...yup...but we don't implement changes based on exceptions because at the end of the day the decision has to pay for itself one way or the other. We can build it but if you don't come what benefit is it to the company and in the end if the only people really using that datarate are the ones who are abusing the network anyway....um yea...that's not gonna work.

256 qam will never happen as long as the return path is at the 5-42mhz spot. 64 would be quite a challenge although possible, The noise level in that spectrum is very difficult to keep under control. Even just keeping a 16 qam clean is a lot of work that requires a lot of special/expensive tools and training.
