Re: [Internet] Any speed increases on the horizon?

said by bigdaddy:

Honest ? Honest about what Gary ?

The Fact that BHN has Slower Upload Speed's Compared to Verizon FiOS ?

Yes it is Honest and a Fact No Lie's Here.

Now you are a BHN Employee you have more insight and Knowledge into when BHN get's Faster Upload Speed's than We the Customer's Do.

But Nitpicking other Paying customer's about why they want more upload Speed's ? tsk tsk tsk Come On Now Gary. It is high Time BHN Upgrade's All Customer's To Faster Upload. It has been 2.5 Year's Since RR Lighting has launched 11-29-2009. Also by the same token Verizon FiOS launched the 35/35 Actual 44/39 Mbps speed tier around the same time as RR Lightning was Released. People Are using the Cloud more and more than they did 2.5 Year's ago and We All know The Cloud is Upload speed Dependent. So Yes It make's Sense when customer's of BHN see the other customer's of Verizon FiOS Enjoying faster Uploads. It's a purely a natural Reaction to want faster upload Regardless If it's Needed or Not.

Bigdaddy don't start down that path....I'm mobile at the moment but I will have much more to add to this response later .

And no it is not a natural reaction to want more more more. Especially when the vast majority aren't utilizing what they have already. You do realize we know these things right....we see what you use vs capacity.....not hard to figure out how many or few people would take advantage of it....but more later.

Okay...

I am back...

1) Personally I don't care what Verizon launched Bigdaddy. 99% of that offering is marketing hype and we both know it. Years ago everyone just had to keep up with the Jones when it came to competitors and speeds and folks lapped it up like sweet milk. Every Tom Dick and Mary (yes I said Mary) just had to have the fastest speeds until they realized that once they exceeded certain speeds there was no real benefit to them because their specific application couldn't take advantage of the speed anyway. You can only surf the web so fast and browsers only render so fast and most quickly figured out that they didn't need their connection to be extreme.

Truth is the vast majority of people do the Netflix, Youtube, Facebook and basic web surfing, basic gaming. email thing and thats about it. This means that the AVERAGE single user household will be very happy with a 20/2 connection. That changes quickly once additional users and streaming based applications are utilized and that's where 40/5 strikes a nice balance.

Bigdaddy most do not engage in P2P, Usenet or similar on a regular or even extreme basis (although they are the ones that gobble up a significant amount of bandwidth). Yes...that SMALL group of guys who are responsible for a majority of the traffic. Most do not YET utilize cloud based services

People are finally educating themselves and basing purchasing decisions based on need...not competing with their neighbor. Determining broadband speed needs is relatively simple btw. We can talk about how need is determined in a different thread....

2) Some (not most) people are using the cloud in limited ways now but we aren't talking about extreme amounts of data (yet). Three reasons for this...

-(1) lack of applications that really do take advantage of it
-(2) cloud based storage is NOT cheap.
-(3) Mobile devices that could have taken full advantage of cloud technology are being hogtied by draconian caps and overage fees.

Truth is early adopters are pushing into the cloud more and more but we aren't quite there yet...the next year or so I expect to see lots of cloud based stuff starting to emerge but again it will all boil down to cost of use across all consumer platforms.

When I said be honest...I meant with yourself. I know you Bigdaddy...you don't fall into the average user category by any stretch and the other part of the honesty statement was based on the weak argument the audio guy leveled. He essentially copy and pasted the typical but pointless and totally left field argument posed by most of the bandwidth guys. No average user would stream data like that and he apparently took me for someone who doesn't know that. I'm not a dummy Bigdaddy (you should know better)...I give the other guy a break because he hasn't posted here before but you know better.

If you are going to post an argument in favor of a specific thing don't regurgitate the typical bandwidth junkie talking points and expect me not to take issue with them.

Just to be clear...nobody is saying that higher upstream bandwidth is bad. I'm just saying based on what I know now the demand isn't there aside from the very few (and I will include myself in that category).

I'm also not saying that we won't see enhancements down the road....all I am saying is don't go off haf-cocked because Verizon comes out with another marketing stunt bandwidth tier offering. It's about the only thing they can offer at the moment and we both know it. Everybody has to have their niche but don't get blinded by it.

This is something i just did that i know alot of people do that sucks with 5m connection. Just uploaded 150mb cd to google music. Took me 10 mins. In theory with 35m up that would have been 1 minute. And not to mention i really couldnt do anything else until it was done.

Gary Listen My intent was not to Personally denigrate you at all. It just sound's like you say the same thing over and over again. I know you can say the same thing about me and many others in this BHN Forum. You and BHN share A world view on how to manage Bandwidth and Speed tier's on the HFC Network form an Operator's Stand Point. That's Great I Understand that. Verizon and BHN do Thing's Differently That's apparent and I See that as well. It's just frustrating for me and other Paying Customer's to see that no strides have been made for Faster Upload in the 2.5 Year's since Lighting was Released. And to top it all off when we ask for faster uploads you get all upset and try to make us all feel foolish for asking. Not trying Argue just trying to get my point across that's All.

I'm consistent with my message and that should mean something to you....it actually speaks volumes if you really take the time to listen to what I'm saying.

The new FiOS 75/35 is pretty tempting... I'm gonna wait and see what the cost will be and if it is in the ball park of BH Lightning, it may be worth investigating.
