Re: Facebook in talks to buy browser company Opera, says report

Opera not only makes a web browser, but they've bought at least three advertising networks. That makes Opera both a browser and an advertisement company. Just like Google.

Opera Software's first quarter 2012 financial report reveals a great deal about the company's current mobile strengths beyond browsing, especially where advertising and mobile revenue are concerned. In 2010, for example, Opera acquired advertising publishing platform AdMarvel. This was followed by the acquisition of advertising suppliers Mobile Theory and 4th Screen Advertising earlier this year. Combined, Opera now claims to offer "the leading global mobile advertising platform," with with a reach of 140 million mobile consumers globally—330 million when Opera's own browsing software is included.

Those companies are for ads on the mobile web. So, not quite the same.

Since I don't have a smartphone or a game console with Opera, it doesn't affect me as a desktop user anymore than Google itself does.
