 | [WIN7] How to turn off wireless? I'm new to laptops. I have always used desktops.
I have Win 7. How do I turn off the wireless with Win 7 and to make sure that everything is secure?
Also, I'm currently connected to the internet using a hard wire that is directly connected from my laptop to my cable modem.
I'm not using a router at this time because I'm so new to this. |

There are multiple ways to disable it. You could pull up the wireless connections, disconnect from the WAP, and configure your settings so it doesn't automatically connect. You can open network connections (ncpa.cpl from "run") and right-click disable it there. The laptop probably has a hardware switch for the wireless as well. It will either be a hotkey (FN + something else, F8 is a common one) or a physical switch somewhere on the exterior of the system -often in front or on the side. If you wanted to get really freaky, you could remove the wireless access panel and unplug both wireless antennae. That will just about guarantee no connectivity.
If you offer the actual make & model of the unit, we can tell you specifically about the switch if you can't find it. I recommend just disabling it from network connections. |

 | reply to Coollikethat You say that you are not using a router which makes me think that you know it would be nice to use one -- and that is correct.
Even if you only have one computer hardwired to the modem, it would be good to insert a decent router in between the modem and the computer to further isolate and protect the computer. |

Some laptops control the wireless with a hard switch, some with a soft switch, some with a function key sequence, and some with software. -- Strange as it seems, no amount of learning can cure stupidity, and formal education positively fortifies it. -- Stephen Vizinczey |

| reply to Coollikethat How about telling us make/model of your new laptop? In this age of working while you fly, most laptops, notebooks, smartphones, tablets, etc have switches to turn off the wireless card or a simple software switch that does not require fudging with the BIOS. |

Looks like a lot of work but it appears that you can check the wired vs. wireless priority this way:
