 | [Sci-Fi] Prometheus Imax 3D If you are going to see Prometheus, see in Imax (if you can).
Wow.
I guess they updated the glasses (much smaller) than last time I saw Imax 3D (not the black scuba goggle-sized but slimmer, smaller black frames).
And the movie was very good. I won't spoil it, but the acting, imaging and effects were good.
Ironically, though not officially an Alien prequel, you get the "Scott" feel of the protagonist (strong female), the captain (fate), the bad guys (Weylan Corp), the all-too human android (irony) and classic man vs man, vs himself and vs nature (xeno).
Definitely a pre-order BluRay for me... -- Splat |

 | I'm afraid I didn't like it. I don't even know if I could care to see it again. I don't think Prometheus offered anything new, awe inspiring or insightful. If its possible to rip yourself off, I think Ridley Scott has done it. I think he is either overrated or no longer feels he has to prove anything. Maybe he is satisfied with being an action film director, and at his best he's a poor man's Stanley Kubrick.
I think I was right when I posted previously that the trailers revealed the whole movie.
Yeah, the film was visually stunning and all that, but how can it not be? Everyone is using the same technology these days, or the latest thing. There was nothing about this film that was ground breaking or could spawn some new trend or memes.
This film was like a high end version of an Alien vs Predator movies, which were all quite forgettable and a dozen times worse than Prometheus. OTOH, there are probably B-movies more exciting than Prometheus.
To me Alien is one of the greatest movies of all time, maybe not a masterpiece, but it is one of only 7 movies I have in my Amazon video library, along with Pulp Fiction and Apocalypse Now, and I have no desire to add anything else right now. |

| reply to cableties I wish we had an Imax theater near us. I know there is one in Cleveland, but it's not worth the drive.
Instead, I'll watch it in 3d on a normal screen. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |

I liked all three of the movies. I just wish they had continued with the cliff hanger of the second one. Though they should/could have used the woman from the end of the first movie.
Either way, they were fun. Then again, I don't take such things to seriously. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |

I did not come in expecting to see Aliens etc, nor did the trailers actually give the whole movie away, and I have been following it since the first news release about it. The visuals and audio where rich and colorful and David the android was awesome. There are layers in this movie that can be missed, so I will either watch it again, or buy the BD when it comes out. -- Getting it Done. |

| reply to cableties I saw the movie yesterday. My opinion:
Stunning visuals, best 3D I've seen so far. Tops Avatar. Saw it in AVX3D and even the dark scenes were perfectly clear. The first thirty minutes especially are pure eye porn.
First act is brilliant. Second act is excellent. It goes down the shitters in the third act.
The script had some major weaknesses and plotholes but overall the film was very enjoyable. I wasn't surprised to find out Lost writer Damon Lindelof wrote parts of the script. That guy is fucking awful. His constant need to infuse spirituality in EVERYTHING he writes really wrinkles my ass. He seems to believe spirituality will somehow impart the movie with inner meaning. He hasn't written anything good since the first two seasons of Lost. How he keeps getting jobs is mind boggling.
I was also terribly annoyed by all the stupid things all those stoner scientists did. There are protocols when engaging with foreign specimens or environments.
They travel in a trillion dollar ship for two years to land on an alien planet. They enter a big mound and the first thing they do is remove their helmet. Even someone with Tourette would go "WTF are you doing moron?"
Stupid scientific mistakes an eight year old could notice are unforgivable in a movie that takes itself so seriously. This isn't Piranha 3D. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Then there's biologist who is stranded in an alien ship in a room where black shit is oozing out of vases and yet he seems to be terribly amused and decides to play with the hissing penis snake. My own dick could tell that thing was unfriendly. Worst biologist in the universe.
Special praises to Fassbender, his impersonation of David was top notch. Rapace's acting was also superb. Charlize Theron was hot as hell but ultimately useless. Except for looking cute in thights, what did she ever accomplish in the movie? Oh yeah she burned that guy. Probably the smartest thing the entire team did while on that planet.
It's worth seeing if only for the visuals and a few horrifying moments that had my dad covering his eyes. |

| reply to cableties DO NOT PAY TO SEE PROMETHEUS.
I saw it today. The movie was horrible. I love scifi movies, but this sucked. Very weak, not thought out plot. Lots of rookie mistakes for a scifi movie in terms of technology and aliens. It has a story you would expect on a low budget scifi channel tv movie. I cant believe they put this in theaters.
I have never asked for my money back for a movie, but I will email the studio asking for it back. I love scifi, but I would rather them not make a movie at all then make something as crappy as this. -- ...brought to you by Carl's Jr. |

| reply to cableties I saw the 2d version. Like it has already been said, the plot isn't anything new. The visuals [landscapes] were awesome, just as good as the ones in John Carter. I bet they would have been stunning in 3d.
I like how they avoided certain things, and created a fork, if you will. Trying not to give away that much. The movie did see to be cast heavy, like others have said. And for big name actors, they played "bit" parts, or what felt like bit parts.
I liked it, and will pick up the blue ray to add to my alien collection that I already have.
I only purchased a matinee ticket, no snacks. So I was hit for 6.75. I felt it was worth that, at least. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |

 | reply to cableties I saw it yesterday.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7 or possibly an 8.
It wasn't great but it wasn't horrible. As TigerLord mentioned, there were MAJOR mistakes made by these "scientists" and "professionals". I couldn't believe how stupid they acted!
I was expecting more from such a hyped up film. |
|
 | reply to r81984 I don't think Ridley Scott makes rookie mistakes. I think he just wants to make money now.
Your feeling and disappointment is close to mine.
However, I may see it one more time just to make sure it's that bad, or maybe my eyes are bad.
I enjoyed Predators (2010) much more. |

| I did have high hopes. And at first it seemed to be more of a smarter scifi movie, but quickly fell apart lacking common sense and logic. It is clear that none of the writers have ever seen anything scifi or ever watched any of the alien movies or any alien movie.
If we wanted off the wall scifi where things dont make sense and a very bad story then we would watch the stupid "D" made for tv movies scifi puts out.
It was clear to me that it was not written for those that like scifi movies. I really dont know what genre they wrote that movie for. -- ...brought to you by Carl's Jr. |

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7 or possibly an 8. You have a skewed scale. I love scifi movies and dont mind some of the crappier ones, but this movie sucked. I give it a 1 out of 10.
In my opinion they did a huge disservice to scifi fans by purposely making a flop and wasting 100s of millions of dollars doing it which will turn off studios from doing real scifi movies in the future. -- ...brought to you by Carl's Jr. |

 | reply to r81984 I thought the first quarter or third of the movie offered some promise.
but then it felt like a dumb action flick marketed as an intelligent sci fi film. |

| reply to cableties The glasses were actually updated sometimes last year. I noticed it when my brother and I went to go see a movie during the holidays last year (I forget the movie atm). Now they are the size of some of the bigger sun glasses. In any case I haven't seen this movie yet but I plan to in the near future.
OT: I can confirm the RealD 3D ones work with some 3D computer monitors, they do with mine at least since mine requires the use of special software to play things in 3D. -- »www.akaskriller.com - Where your phone dreams come true! |

***edit***
At first I couldnt quite reconcile the first scene where the Engineer essentially sacrificed himself. However, I suppose it was an act to seed the planet with varied life using the Engineers DNA as a base. Death to bring life. Presumably only to return and destroy that life later. I guess the intentions of the Engineers were never really addressed.
The ending seemed to suggest the possibility of another movie with Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and a damaged David (Michael Fassbender) taking an Engineer ship and going deeper into Engineer territory,
.or to the next engineered planet.
I really liked the original Alien movie although it is a little tame (slow) by todays standards and somewhat dated with respect to special effects. I really liked Aliens as well.
For what its worth, my Wife and I caught a matinee of Prometheus in 3D. We were going out of town and she said we had time to see it before leaving and she knew how much I wanted to see it. Shes a good sport considering its not her type of movie. |

 | reply to r81984 said by r81984:You have a skewed scale. I love scifi movies and dont mind some of the crappier ones, but this movie sucked. As a sci-fi fan myself I have to ask what sort of movies do you like? I ask because science fiction is pretty broad and I notice some sci-fi fans like certain things while others look toward other stuff. Knowing what movies you love (and maybe why) would help get a better compass reading on our opinions of Prometheus.
Actually to you other sci-fi fans that have seen the movie if you can state your faves as well (and maybe why) it could go a long way for those of us wondering about the movie and seeing some wide disparity of opinions. |
