Holy Shit

I have 4 smartphones on my plan right now. 1400 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data. We use at most 200 minutes of voice a month. Wife, son, and I send maybe 100 texts each a month, daughter sends probably over 100 a day though. We use 15-20GB of combined data a month. Total cost right now is about $200 a month.

With this new plan I'd be paying a minimum $260 not counting the ridiculous overage charges I'd have to pay for using twice the allotment of data. It will be worth it to pay full price for devices and keep my old plan as long as I can. Once they force me onto a family data deal (even if I pay full retail for devices they'll likely force it at some point) I'll seriously consider switching services.

You do realize that is a car payment, right?

Depends on one's perspective, and (in part) their location.

Tmobile has a plan that is 100 minutes per line, unlimited texts and unlimited data (5GB then throttled) for 30 dollars a month. If you need more than 100 min, you can add unlimited mobile to mobile for 10 bucks more, and you can request free UMA/IMS wifi calling (all calls originating over your wifi are free).
You should be able to come in at least 600 dollars cheaper a year with this, if not more.

But T-mobile's network is horrendous. They have to be cheap because they have no coverage.

Nothing wrong with Kia's, I've owned three of em and would take them over any of the US big 3 anyday.

$260/month otoh is a decently equipped Camry or Accord for most people.

Depends where you go. T-mobile coverage for me has worked everywhere from virignia to DC to southern maryland. Except when you go to the outskirts of small towns, there Verizon will work when T-mobile doesn't.

The big change will be LTE. T-mobile is outclassed when it comes to high speeds, but if the cap is so low then maybe speed doesn't matter.

Camry starts at $22,055. That is the lowest no options you can get. Not a desirable car. Even if you can get 0% interest and stretch it out to 6 years that's a payment of $306.32 a month. Accord starts at $21,480. That's $298.33 a month at 72 months and 0%. Decently equipped versions go up rather quickly. And very few qualify for 0% interest, or even very low interest. And those that do are not typically buying Camrys and Accords.

You're shopping in the wrong places then. You can get Camry's for ~$16k around here (Yes, new).

I just used MSRP. Still my argument is valid. A good car is not $260 a month. At least to those of us who are more affluent.

I suppose what you would need to ask yourself then, is if it's worth it to you to pay 600+ more dollars a year for coverage you rarely or never use.

While there are certainly some consumers who it would not work for, a huge chunk of the population would be just fine with t-mobile.

So you need to pay more to get a good car? hardly. It's just a car. Heck I'll take any minivan over a 100K sports car. But even a mini-van is to pricey for driving a car. I would rather take the money I save on buying a $15K or less car and spend it on things I will get some real enjoyment from. Like PCs, and electronics. I'd be more likely to spend the $15K savings on a sever than get a $30K car. I get no enjoyment from a car, but unfortunately it is a necessity for me.

I drive an older used sports car for $160 per month. That was a $5000 loan, at 5.5% fixed, paid back over 3 years. Your shopping in the wrong places if you cant get a good deal these days. Hell, I only pay $45 per month for unlimited everything for my cell phone too, so, why you wouldnt jump ship to a prepaid carrier these days who have much better deals is beyond me.

I'm more likely to spend the money on the gadgets as well as the refined automobile. But then again, I have the money to do so. Not everyone does. And I get real enjoyment from nice vehicles more so than technology. To each their own.

I travel frequently in rural areas so I need the broad coverage. No other carrier offers the coverage I need in the areas I need it unfortunately.

I can get a good deal, I just don't want a used car. I don't want someone else's problems. Good job on paying an auto loan off in 3 years. My moto is if you can't pay it off in 3 years then you can't afford it.

But back on topic, can I even get a prepaid unlimited everything plan that offers the coverage that Verizon does?

This. Honestly, if it's that big a deal - vote with your wallet.
