[Speed] Suddenlink Cable internet Lag

I am having problems with the PS3 on Muskogee Oklahoma Suddenlink.net. My Ps3 is only getting 6-8 meg download from my 15 meg service. Even if I am connected directly to the Suddenlink furnished modem. My Apple TV ad Netflix is also slow to load most of the time. I get so aggravated playing MW3 or and online games on the PS3 because I can unload a whole clip of ammo is a enemy's chest and they kill me in one shot. My screen have even showed me hiding behind an object and the kill came replay from the person that shot me shows me in the open. I would love a fix.

Throughput and latency (as experienced in gaming) are frequently mostly-separate issues. Are you experiencing any packet loss? How do the modem levels look?

If you can't open it, you don't own it.

I have good internet speed between me and Suddenlink. 15meg dnld and 1.51 upld. Beyond that not so good. My PS3 is only receiving 6-8 meg dnld as mentioned and Sony says it can only receive what it can get. I have an Arris TM602G Suddenlink Modem. I have run Ping Test from PingTest.net and is show 0 packet loss.Line Quality B MOS: 4.36, Ping 71ms but it varies, Jitter 7 Ms. This is from a server 50 miles away. On a server in San Francisco the Line Q is a B Mos: 4.33, Ping 112ms, Jitter 15MS. This server is 1300 miles away. I assume the MW3 Servers are probably on the Coast somewhere.
As far as the Modem and house wiring I have a new modem and a new coax from the modem to the pole.
I am not sure about the meaning of modem levels that you are asking for but I am pasting some info from the web interface.

I have noticed when playing some games a difference in the game play sounds. For instance When I am lagging My Machine Pistol shoot slower like POP POP POP. And I have a hdd time killing anyone. Its like as soon as I see them they have already fired a shot or two and I am dead. Once in a great while maybe twice in the last 3 months my Machine Pistols would go POPPOPPOPPOPPOPPOP real fast and its like I barley got the trigger pulled and they are already dead.

I have Called Sony, they said to call Suddenlink, they said to Call Sony and they said to call Activision. Back and Forth. And they all say their equipment is running fine.

Oh and that for your quick response.

wow, a doc1 system...?

your bandwidth doesn't really matter for gaming on a console. you're likely not even using 1 meg to play online. it's the latency. and regardless of what ANYONE says, at 100-150 ms you still won't be getting killed before you see them on screen. you're talking 1-2 TENTHS of a second.

have you tried to unplug your modem from the power for a minute to reset it? you're showing 50+days. would also be helpful to run some tracert to the game servers if possible, or a smokeping on your ip address so we can see what's going on with the latency.

that jitter has me a bit concerned though. usually you'll start to see jitter on an oversold node :/

Re: [Speed] Suddenlink Cable internet Lag
I just unplugged the modem, removed battery, unplugged ethernet wire and coaxial and let set for 5 minutes.

Here is the smoke ping link that was run before the reset of the modem. I found it earlier but do not know if it is setup right.

All this info is run from the computer. I do not know if I should be running it from the PS3 or if I even can. I will try to see if I can tracert but I have never done it but will look in to it.

No, I actually don't work for SL :/

BUT! Your connection looks ok at your house from what I can see here. Still curious about the Doc 1 setup.... Looks like the issue is your local node starting to run out of bandwidth. You're picking up some decent increase in latency at the last SL router before hoping networks (all SL customers in the area are sharing one outbound jump) It does seem to be, from what I can see, isolated to the west coast.

Could you run a tracert to anything that you know to be on the east coast?

ALSO, it looks like you are turning your computer/modem off at night. Could you leave it on so the smokeping test will show results during "prime time". Only needed for a day or two

I have smoke ping on now. I am looking for something to tracert on the east coast. Doing a web search I guess.

Suddenlink tells me the further out I go that I am going to loose download speed and increase latency.
My connection to Suddenlink network is usually good but out of the network it slows down. Right now my PS3 Network Utility is only receiving 6 mg dnld. Having a hard time getting in to games. And several server host timed out.

Thanks

That is correct. Obviously electrical signals take a certain amount of time to travel a certain amount of cable. The thing I am pointing out is that you are experiencing a lag spike before you are leaving the SL network. Not only does this mean that your signal hasn't gone that far (relatively), but being it's the LAST hop on SL network, that either the router is borked or they are having capacity issues.

I would suggest also getting in touch with Ashley from SL now that she has made a post in this topic. She will have access to actual network information that I can't see.

Having problems playing games today and even a little worse. My PS3 Network Test Utility just displayed a 1.9Mbps Down Load. 1.1Mpbs Upload. I have no idea about what's going on. Speedtest shows everything running fast.

The Suddenlink Technicians came yesterday and replaced my modem with an Arris DocSis 3.0 modem. Noticed a couple of improvements instantly that I like. The reason they changed the modem was that they hooked up their laptop and ran speed tests and noticed a fluctuation in upload and download speeds. They said they and been reading article that there was a lot of problems with the Arris TM602 keeping a constant speed. So they install an Arris WBM706a modem with a splitter so I can use the old modem for my phone and the new one for my internet. They still share the same coax to the box out side. They were speed testing from here to Chicago since they said Muskogee Oklahoma main line is fiber optic straight to Chicago IL. Then it goes back to Tyler Texas.
The new modem fix the speed fluctuation and is constant now. As the new modem gives an instant ip address to my router as soon as you plug up the modem (NICE)!

But the sad part is I am trying play a online game on my PS3 and I can not even play to night because the lag is so bad. Before the modem was replace the PS3 speediest utility was reading 6-8 meg download and 1.1 meg upload pretty constant. After the modem replacement while the technicians were still here it dropped to 3 and 4 meg download. Tonight it is 785.6kbps dnld and 302.4kbps upload. I can not even begging to play with the screen jumping so bad. So I just shut it down.

The Suddenlink Technicians said that there was not too many people on this node so they didn't think it was an oversold node. These are the same technicians that have come out several times in the past. They were also having problems running on their small laptop that was about 1/3 the size of my MacBook Pro. It was showing slow speeds, so they finally hooked ran the speed test on my Mac Pro desktop and it worked a lot better.

It just seems like I should not be having these problems since their is a fiber optic line.?

I Suddenlink Tech even was talking about his PS3 on wireless and I said there is no way I will try that again because my speeds drop almost in half with wireless.

I haven't had much time to run test since yesterday but I will try in the morning.

Also running any software to test for open ports shows that there are no open ports. It is my understanding that you have to have a program running on the device to check for open ports. T or F!

Ports being unblocked are required by the online gaming since they are used in the games.
