Re: Triple play upgrade pricing

I just moved from Fios after they don't want to extend the promotion. I called Optimum CSR last Friday and scheduled installation for the next day. Yesterday I received my monthly bill. This is the details:
iO Gold includes Broadcast Basic (Special Optimum Promotion) $65.05
Cable card $4 (I use TiVo)
State Sales Tax $1.74
Franchise Fee $1.60
State Reg Fee $0.15
FCC User Fee $0.06
Optimum Online (Special Optimum Promotion) $29.95
Boost Plus (Special Optimum Promotion) $9.95
Optimum Voice (Special Optimum Promotion) $14.95
Total Current charges $127.45
Special Optimum Promotion for 24 months.
The CSR also offered me: an iPod touch or $200 gift card after 30 days of service.

My question: Is this a good price for a new Optimum customer?

When I called Optimum CSR, I was surprised when they still keep my information from 2 years ago, before I moved to Fios. How long usually does cable company keep your information after you don't use their services?

The internet is stable (always above 50 for download and around 8 for upload). iO TV quality is the same as Fios, although Optimum doesn't have EPIX and only BBC America HD has a closed caption problem (90% doesn't show the closed caption, although BBC America SD doesn't have a closed caption problem).

So far, so good. I love the competition between cable companies.

You did extremely well -- because you were coming from Fios..

See my post up higher for what I got for iO Silver, 1 CableCard, Boost Plus and OV.

Are you talking about email? I don't think CV knows how to disable accounts

Have you reported it to CV?

Nope, not email. Optimum keeps my account bill details from 2 years ago, after I disconnected my services. The CSR knew what channels I subscribed from Optimum before I moved to Fios.

I reported the closed caption problem yesterday and Optimum CSR just blamed TiVo for the BBC America HD closed caption problem, even after I mentioned I don't have any closed caption problems with any other HD channels and BBC America SD channel.

Not sure if you realized, but there is a notice on the back of your bill on who to contact regarding closed captioning issues.. Not sure if you spoke to a regular CSR or if you used the info from the back of the bill

I called that number 888-420-0777 yesterday and today to solve the closed caption problem with BBC America HD. Each time, the CSRs blamed the TiVo. They mentioned I should contact TiVo CSR to solve it. Does anyone have a closed caption problem with BBC America HD?

Just tuned in on my 8300HD and no problem with CC on BBC America HD. HD Closed Captioning is handled by the box, where SD is by the TV, so what they say is definitely plausible.

I can tell you this -- my Tivo seems to mangle the CC on BBCA-HD on shows where its available.

Fox Business HD does CC fine... As you can see, the CC returned by the Tivo doesn't make much sense... It may indeed be a Tivo issue.

I'm trying to get an example of Battlestar Galactica CC to test the same program giving you problems, but they haven't said a word in the past 2 minutes. Will edit shortly.

Commercial is doing fine.

edit: Regular program is also fine.

I have the same BBC America HD closed caption problem as RickNY. Thank you for showing it. I thought I'm the only one who has that problem.

Think I found the solution to your problem...

Based on info from here:

Turn "Digital Captions" to "None" (Settings..Displays...Closed Captioning)

Leave "Analog Captions" alone..

Actually -- I found the opposite to be true -- turning "Analog Captions" to "NONE" and leaving "Digital Captions" at DTVCC1 worked.. My suggestion is to experiment with both settings and see what works best for you -- I do not use captioning on a regular basis, but it seems obvious that you do -- so you would be the better judge to see which combination of settings works best.

Tivo also has an info page on garbled captioning here: »support.tivo.com/app/answers/det···#garbled They suggest the settings in my crossed out section to see if it fixes the problem.

Hope that helps..
Rick

Thank you very much, Rick. It solves the closed caption problem for BBC America HD. Prior to this, I followed the directions from tivocommunity and turned off the digital closed caption, it works for every channel except BBC America HD.
