| (Praise, Mostly) Seagate Barracuda RMA About mid My my lmost year old 2 TB Barracuda drive began to get flaky. It started getting bad sectors at an alarming rate until chkdsk /r could not fix it.
I'm under warranty until Sept. 2013.
I called their support line which is really awesome.
I paid the Advanced RMA fee of 10 bux so I didn't have to wait until they received my bad drive before shipping the replacement.
I got it less than 2 days later.
That drive experienced the same issue.
Lather rinse repeat.
They waived the advanced RMA fee and got me another drive in less than 2 days.
That one held up from Jun 15 until this weekend when it began clicking and failed to be detected in Windows on multiple PCs with multiple USB enclosures.
I called back today and the nice gentleman Neal C. found me a brand new drive (no refurb this time) and again waived the advanced RMA fee.
We'll see how it goes from here.
Their support I praise but those darn refurbed drives seem to be useless.

 | reply to workablob I've had good results with Seagate Support... They've changed their stance on firmware, too.... 10 years ago they wouldn't let you update firmware on a drive... Now, They do... Yes... I think that is good.... -- Looking for 1939 Indian Motocycle |

 | reply to workablob Many (all) Seagate Barracuda drives that you buy today have only a one year warranty. I bought a drive two weeks ago (mid-June) and checked Seagate's warranty page. The warranty expires March 28, 2013. Less than 10 months.
F*** that. I wouldn't touch another one with a 10 foot pole. |

| reply to workablob I think I can blame my Element External USB Enclosure.
I torres an old 200GB drive in it and it worked for a while.
I then took the new identical Element enclosure and slapped a spare 80GB sata in it and tried to get both going on a Dell GX260.
Only the 80GB was detected.
I removed the 80 and after a few replugs and power cycles on the old Element the 200 was detected but not the 80.
A few more replugs and power cycles and the 200 would not be detected in any PC.
Then it began clicking.
