You can try to use discount code "PLSR". It knocked off $100 off $500 Lifetime Service Charge. It worked for me several months ago.

Also, just in case it wasn't clear before, Lifetime service is for the lifetime of the box, not the person. But these are pretty dependable boxes that can last many years. Lifetime is definitely the long term better option if one can afford it.

If you can wait until around the end of the year, the Ceton Q should be out. It will not require a subscription.

You can buy a Tivo at most major electronics stores or online. Sometimes Tivo runs specials on their website. That is where I got my Tivo-HD, directly from Tivo with a lifetime subscription.

Figure a Tivo plus lifetime subscription costs about $500. A DVR from Comcast cost $15 a month in my area. That's about a 2.75 year payback, round it up to three years with the monthly cablecard fee.

I have been in the black for several years now and have no regrets.

FYI not all cable companies charge a monthly fee for the first cable card if it's replacing the cable box. Comcast Seattle, for instance.

Even when they do it's often not much. I live north of Seattle and have Comcast. The cable box is free and I pay $3/mo for a cablecard.
