Re: [TWC] been lagging bad for 7 months

Signal is too high for d3. Your uncorrectable codewords count looks as if either you have a tap issue (since your tv is acting badly) or your modem outlet is ran through your house amp. D3 needs to be as close to 0db as possible downstream and your upstream looks ok but the snr which you cant see is what can break your latency.

The signals and codeword error rates at the modem are fine. If the signals were too high the SNR would drop and the error rates would be in the thousands.

i have a tech coming over on the 11th what do you suggest i mention to him/her... and what should i recommend them to look at or try

thanks in advance

these are quite high jitters for such a close test don't you think?
i also did other pingtests and i would get 1 ms jitter 8 ms jitter then 23 ms jitter these are all done on the same local server

this is my event log basically summed up and these errors are from my modems mac address to a mac address i can't find what it belongs to....

Missing BP Configuration Setting TLV Type
Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time out;
DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response
No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time out
SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire FEC framing

i got like the sync timing synchronization failure 30x

Lets not get carried away. A motorola D3 operating range is +15 to -15. I managed to get mine down to -18 without seeing any difference in latency or bandwidth.

The hop from hawaii to socal looks high.

Huh? Picking the worst numbers for each channel:

8.5dBmV is pretty well within spec. -10 to +10 is conservative, DOCSIS spec is -15 to +15.
39.9dB is great for SNR.
48.2 is a nice number of the upload level to be at. 40-52 is within spec.
If his modem has been up for any length of time, 28 correctable and 117 uncorrectables is practically nothing.

His lag problems are likely elsewhere.

is there anything you'd suggest checking? or how i could troubleshoot this problem i have a tech coming over on the 11th and he/she will be the 14th in 4 months i want to be fully prepared and get them working on what needs to be done to fix it... or point me in the right direction so i can fix it myself.

Rated spec range and realistic operational range are 2 totally different things. Ive installed plenty of these and ubee emtas and really only encounter any issues above +2 and they work well from -7 upward. OPs problem is not an uncommon issue and the usual solution is one of those 2 things generally speaking.

i see... is there a way to get the power levels down? because i have mentioned that to the techs tier 3 techs on the phone and they said no.... they also said i can't switch back to a regular modem with the speeds i have now... i read about these gateways being over senitive and giving alot of problems to your network... just wondering if these things are true...

your help is greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance

Usually there is nothing a customer can do to fix these problems on your end unless like i stated in previous post, your modem cable outlet is running through a house amp... It is most of the time caused by an issue from the pole to the demarc point on your house which is better left to the pros. They are correct in saying that you cant switch back to a Docsis 2 modem with your tier. Also it is not your gateway that causes most issues, if any, but the system in some areas is just not good enough or in some cases just not proper for the newer tech to work well. Anyhow, this is almost identical to what i was thinking to do. Jabbu See Profile is on point as to what you can do in this situation

said by Jabbu:

You'll want the tech to:

Run a docsis test and sit on it for 3+ min.
Check BER on all docsis QAMs. MER is posted in your log and looks good.
Have him run a DQI on your line while you chat, this is a over time test and he can leave the meter on for 10-30min to catch any issue.
DQI should be 10 in a perfect world.
If everything is coming up good, ask him to find out the US SNR, and be sure he doesn't pull the downstream SNR. This is something only a tool/website on his computer or a call into tier3 is going to tell him.

thank you for the info and im almost positive it does run through my house amp.. and i know the internet coax that goes to my modem runs through a splitter... it's connected to the side that says 51002mghz and then theres a middle one then the right side says splitter... is there anyway to bypass this for the internet but still allow the tv cable to work?

4 Locked TDMA 4 2560 Ksym/sec 19200000 Hz 49.9 dBmV

these are my new specs through a splitter.... it's alot more playable and seems like things are connecting better... but it's still far off from what it use to be... the lag im experiencing is more of like a screen lag feel... like nothings in sync...and it's far worse than before... before i'd be on a two bar and it really wouldn't effect me as much... now i'll be on a four bar on xbox and even host and it lags... the lag is constant and on every game... i've been mointoring my packets lately and i have 0% loss... so im ruling that out..i've tried two different tv's recently one with hdmi cord and another with digital av cables the blue green red one... im planning on trying a 4g le hotspot just to determine if its my isp... or something in my house messing with the signal or wiring and electrical problems etc... i've also been reading about NIC cards? not sure how i'd install that in my router or modem cause im sure road runner has policys that you can't open up their modem... then i've also been thinking about trying dc taps.. cause i notice through the splitter it's better but the upstream power level spikes high to 52.... 49 is the lowest it's been since i've tried the splitter... and from what i understand the directional couplers lower the upstream power level along with the downstream power level...

im not quite sure how to test it directly through the amp or outside at the box if anyone could run me through the steps i'd gladly try that

thanks in advance

hi i've noticed that my downstream and upstream power spike alot so i use a splitter now the upstream goes up to a high of 52 lowest is 49 i've seen so far the downstream power levels go to 3 and highest 5-6 but i noticed that my uncorrectables and correctables are going nuts

1 Locked QAM256 186 591000000 Hz 3.9 dBmV 40.3 dB [12326] [3583]
2 Locked QAM256 29 585000000 Hz 3.5 dBmV 39.5 dB [12715] [3685]

4 Locked QAM256 188 603000000 Hz 3.7 dBmV 39.5 dB [12548] [3257]

as you can see the correctables all in 12000 range..... seems really high higher then i've ever seen it and uncorrectable all in 3000 range!!.... im having a electrician come over to check my house wirings the outlets the house amp tap and possibly the drop?

what should i have him look for and what should i tell him to help him find this problem

also here are my upstream specs

Upstream Bonded Channels

Those are generally the only two things that cause issues such as what you have going on. Usually what happens is there is a tap problem and your signals go nuts and cause all the problems and your amp (which HSI isn't supposed to be running thru anyways) amplifies the problem. Also less frequently, bad outdoor splitters or bad cables. You have covered all the bases on this one.
