The latest technology

I had FiOS installed yesterday. It was interesting to note that the guy who installed this very modern high-tech electronic service still used an old-fashioned butt set and punch-down tool for the telephone connections. Some things never change.

Yep, it's still just a twisted pair (POTS). Testing gear for it will never change till the equipment at the end (like a digital handset) does.

I think it would be great if there were WiFi phones that could use my home phone service. Not Vonange or such, my Verizon POTS or FiOS phone server. The next step would be an app so I could used my Smartphone as a handset at home on my home phone line.

I agree that it would be really cool to be able to use SIP phones or the like with Verizon's home phone service.

Set up Asterisk or Freeswitch at your home and you're all set for SIP-based devices. Can be Wired, Wireless, or VPN-connected at that point. They have apps that work for phones on Asterisk systems, too!

I was searching up some stuff about setting up a PSTN Gateway at home, but the only options I found were to buy expensive PCI cards that were compatible with Asterik, nothing to use my existing modem. It'd be awesome if you knew how to do it otherwise though!

It could probably be made to work with a standard PCI modem capable of doing voice clearly. It is open source after all. Just keep in mind, you need to have a full duplex modem, not one of those that will fail to transmit audio in one direction while the other is transmitting. That's probably where the expensive is coming from in addition to support.

If you do use a VoIP provider a SIP tunnel to Asterisk should work fine as well.

I'm really curious now, I'm going to try and read up on it a little more, I do have a pretty good voice modem in one machine, the one I'd probably install Asterik's software on, as well as a few spare voice modems lying around. A few hours of looking stuff up the other day didn't get me far though, as far as getting it set up without some other sort of PSTN gateway.

I will look into this. It sounds like SIP is a protocol for running voice over IP. It must include dialing and such. Would it be possible to have a small box that on one end connects to a POTS line and the other end is Ethernet. The box would simply convert the POTS to SIP and SIP to POTS. Would I then be able to plug a SIP device into my network and make calls? I guess the problem is what if two SIP devices want to make a call? Also, if you have multiple SIP devices, they should be able to call each other. My guess is that Asterisk supports managing the SIP devices.

So, a Modem in a PC does the SIP to POTS and POTS to SIP conversion. But, that is overkill.

I will have to look into this.

A standard modem in a PC is usually not enough to do the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) conversion to/from Asterisk. There is a device Linksys makes, the SPA3102, which I've been looking at, which APPEARS to be compatible with Asterisk and able to route all calls to and from the PSTN, though the setup still looks a bit complicated.

You are correct in that Asterisk manages the SIP devices.

The SPA3102 requires:

An active Internet phone service account and its settings

That would not be what I am looking for. I want it to route calls over my POTS line, not the Internet.

This is complicated.

As far as I could tell, people are setting up SPA3102s as PSTN Gateways without any sort of internet phone service, but I don't know for 100% sure.
