Question about Newsgroup Access

I just found out that Mediacom gives us access to Newsgroups through Giganews.
Does anyone know what the limits are such as how may connections we are allowed is there a download limit on Binaries? Are we throttled on speeds?

Re: Question about Newsgroup Access

No official limits, and you aren't really throttled any slower than your provisioned HSI speeds and server you are connecting to.

You are just not looking in the right groups I seem to be limited to 5 connections and throttled to between 5-6 Mbs

Giganews does not throttle and the number of connections depends on the plan you subscribe to. I regularly get 17Mbs, although I'm on Comcast.

I know before long ago when mediacom had their own news server retention was 24 hours. I can't speak for the service they provide through giganews but Im sure its limited by a certain amount of gigs you can get per month. Id PM MediacomChad, I'm sure he can get the info you need

I have been playing with it since yesterday and have pulled down 20 gigs worth of stuff that you claim is filtered out.
So I am pretty sure you have no idea what you are talking about.

I can tell you a "real" giganews account has over 100k groups. I have used it for years. Hobo Clown hope that helps you , if you see close to that many groups then your in good shape

Well, Boss I am am not going to count them but there is a bunch including alt.binaries.

I guess I will test the waters to see if there is a monthly download limit I have downloaded 25 gigs of Linux ISO's so far.

There aren't. I had mediacom for years and would regularly pull down 500 gigs + a month

What's the server address? I haven't used their severs for years.

~5 megabits download, 6 connections max, around 200 days retention. Doesn't seem to be filtered much. Thanks but no thanks.

You don't need to use a login name.

I have downloaded things this week that were over a year old and it worked just fine so I think you are wrong about the retention.
Last week I downloaded 150 GB so there seems to be no limit so far.
I will take it for free.

giganews retention is well over 2 years and maybe even 3 now, so id say your correct on that.

I decided to give these servers a try but if I'm not suppose to use a login/password why is it failing with a "480 authentication required" error?

^^^^You're using netnews.mchsi.com I assume. If it's not working try a different news client then bother mediacom chad perhaps.

200 day old posts were failing. I only tried 2 or 3. Might depend on the group, but I'm not going to bother testing further. 5mbits, ugh. No encryption AND connected to mediacom, ugh.

Hopefully for your sake you got some special deal with giganews Boss, their regular price is a joke. Supernews, astraweb, etc are a much better value with nearly the same retention.

Giganews - 1457 days.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. 5mbit newsgroup access is better than no newsgroup access at all, and is at least consistent transfer speed without being attached to a torrent.

Looks right at its mouth.

Better than nothing, which goes without saying. But there you go.

Only the mentally deficient would use torrents now.
