 | Olympic streaming quality issues After fussing around for an hour trying to get logged in (have to allow Flash cookies), the stream I'm getting is pretty awful. It skips, freezes, and even the 720p version looks very soft.
Is it working well for you? |
|
 | No.
Even at the lowest quality settings it's jerky. And every 10 to 15 minutes it locks up and I have to restart Firefox to get it to work again...For 10 or 15 minutes.
My bandwidth is fine, Flash videos play fine everywhere else, but I just spent 3+ hours trying to watch the Archery competition.....Split between my desktop and laptop so when one froze I could switch to the other. |

bohratomJersey Shore will rise again join:2011-07-07 Red Bank NJ | reply to lorennerol Its not a comcast issue as many in the FIOS forums like myself have the same frame loss watching any streams. NBC went with youtube to provide the streaming and its pretty obvious they don't have enough bandwidth to cover the demand. Whoever at NBC that decided to use youtube should be looking for a new job now. |

aabaaf join:2011-12-09 Lombard, IL | reply to lorennerol They went with YOU TUBE, since millions of people use YOU TUBE daily. Also b/c who owns YOU TUBE, GOOGLE?????? So they figured with all of GOOGLE's resources it should work. |

 | reply to lorennerol So basically, NBC has screwed the pooch on streaming coverage again.
I should learn to be less hopeful about their coverage of the Olympics ever improving; from the non-stop commentator droning, to the endless puff-pieces, to their choice of streaming technology (Flash, really?).
Sigh. |

1 edit | reply to lorennerol Same here. I have an above average Windows 7 computer with an SSD 2nd gen Core i5 processor with 8GB DDR3 RAM and the NBC player is laggy and Flash will crash. I can only use it in IE9 because my version of Chrome, that latest beta, won't work.
This is extremely disappointing. The Silverlight player of 2008 worked extremely well when I was on my older and slower Macbook.
I'm leaning towards blaming Adobe. Flash is really showing it's age. It was never put under this much stress. |

 | You have to wonder. The commercials in between live streaming don't have the stuttering problem. If you turn on the video info debug by right clicking in flash there are LOTS of frame drops during the live stream.
I also have a core i5 with LOTS of memory. Too bad they went with flash instead of providing an HTML5 player. |

LinklistPremium join:2002-03-03 Longport, NJ kudos:5 3 edits | reply to lorennerol There may be an IPV6 routing issue at play too(I found IPV6 routing when CDNs(content delivery networks like Akamai) are involved may result in non-optimal servers chosen). I saw all the problems you all are seeing both on my Windows PCs and also using the 2 iPad apps which don't use flash to deliver Olympic streams. I disabled IPV6 at my router and the video streams improved greatly. Not perfect - still an occasional stutter or buffering, but much much better than when IPV6 was the protocol.
Tip: I have a slower PC(few years old, 1.8GHZ dual core) and find that changing youtube quality for the stream down to 240P keeps the stream flowing w/o problems because the CPU and built-in video card can then keep up. And the quality onscreen is not really that bad. Doing 426x240 30fps and dropping zero frames using software video decoding & rendering. Faster systems should work at higher video quality. I suggest using the YouTube "Auto" setting for video quality.
P.S.>> I find with the AUTO quality setting, I get 480P playing back already recorded video vs the LIVE streams. When doing LIVE streams the lower quality settings work best. -- »www.mittromney.com/s/repeal-and-···bamacare »www.mittromney.com/issues/health-care |

 | All I know is I called Comcast today (Maplewood Minnesota). Their network is in the "bag". They will fix it in 4 hours. To bad it has been broken since Monday.....8^( |

Sigh. NBC did screw it up, but what's wrong with flash? What did you want, silverlight? HTML5 sucks.
Also, i'm maxing out at 500kB/s while watching the highlights in 720/1080p. I usually don't have a problem with youtube but it seems the ads NBC is airing are from a third party and that's what the problem is. -- I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock. |

 | reply to lorennerol Sorry all no issues here at all. Maybe you have a network configuration error on your side.. |

It's somewhat better now; the frame drops and freezes are less frequent. Still, the compression and frame rate result in fast-moving objects (volleyballs, water polo balls, ping pong balls, shuttlecocks, etc.) disappearing. I don't expect to be able see Usain Bolt at all, once he leaves the blocks. |

Re: Olympic streaming quality issues I get about 19-25fps on avg here in IL Chicago Area. It shutters quite a bit with lots of frames dropped but is watchable. No difference in frames dropped between 360p and 1080p.
Although during gymnastics yesterday you could tell MANY people were watching. It was really slow and froze at times. |

 | reply to lorennerol I am using a london vpn server and using the BBC live feeds on both my desktop and tablet and I have to say that it has been awesome. No problems with the comcast connection. No stuttering and there are commentators on every sport that are doing a decent job. I left NBC in the dust. |
