Benefits of Outsourced SecurityThree elderly activists at Oak Ridge National Lab cut through two perimeter fences to reach the outer wall of a building where highly enriched uranium, a key nuclear bomb component, is stored. While moving between the perimeter fences, the activists triggered sensors that alerted security personnel. But officials conceded the intruders were still able to reach the building's walls before security personnel got to them. WSI Oak Ridge, the contractor responsible for protecting the facility at Oak Ridge, Tenn., is owned by the international security firm G4S, which was at the center of a dispute over security at the London Olympic Games. » usnews.nbcnews.com/_news ··· ing?liteThat is some security. |

Calling themselves Transform Now Plowshares, Michael R. Walli (63), Megan Rice (82), and Greg Boertje-Obed (57) entered the Y-12 nuclear weapons facility before dawn. This action is one of a long tradition of Plowshares disarmament actions in the US and around the world which challenge war-making and weapons of mass destruction. » thewe.name/weplanet/news ··· res.html» www.salem-news.com/artic ··· s-le.php |

It's caused a fair amount of outrage here, as you can imagine. A few years ago this would have been unthinkable, but no more. But while guards were fired over it, and contractors let go, the Federal employees responsible were only reassigned. said by KNS : The statement provided to the News Sentinel also said a "relevant" federal official at the National Nuclear Security Administration's oversight office at Y-12 had been temporarily reassigned, pending outcome of an investigation launched by the department's health, safety and security chief Glenn Podonsky.
DOE is the group that replaced guards and dogs with contractors and automated tech. There's still some question as to whether the tech itself failed - DOE says alarms were set off, the guards swear they weren't. And NNSA is still backing cutting the number of guards: said by KNS : Despite the unprecedented security breach last weekend, the Oak Ridge security contractor WSI-Oak Ridge reportedly plans to continue forward with plans to eliminate about 50 security jobs, including 34 security police officers at Y-12.
Steven Wyatt, a spokesman for the National Nuclear Security Administration, said a federal review supported the job cuts. The NNSA did an Oak Ridge review last year to see where security costs could be reduced.

Why is this about outsourcing, and not about selecting the wrong kind or amount of security?
Is anybody really suggesting that the above couldn't happen with actual Federal employees? |

Absolutely could happen with Federal employees.
Decisions and policies come from the top. |

They released a faith-based statement saying, A loving and compassionate Creator invites us to take the urgent and decisive steps to transform the U.S. empire, and this facility, into life-giving alternatives which resolve real problems of poverty and environmental degradation for all.
The actors also delivered an indictment citing U.S. Constitutional and Treaty Law as well as the Nuremberg Principles:
The ongoing building and maintenance of Oak Ridge Y-12 constitute war crimes that can and should be investigated and prosecuted by judicial authorities at all levels. We are required by International Law to denounce and resist known crimes.
Hopefully these jokers will be sentenced to 10 years in Federal prison. |

Sure could; but I reckon it's more likely to happen in a for-profit company where there's no direct management chain between them doing the guarding and them wanting the guarding done.
And of course, the mere fact that it involves G4S, known internationally for promising more than it can deliver, adds a little fuel to this fire. |

well they had the deterrent, the delay and the detection in place, managed to assess and respond to it.....
Sounds like the deterrent needs to be somewhat stronger and the delay somewhat longer.
I'm picturing an Indian Jones-style vision of obstacles and challenges.... |
