[iPhone] Using Google Voice app

A friend has the iPhone 4, his new employer will give him an iPhone 4S. He asked me (his tech 'guru') how he should handle the two.
I'm not sure if this is possible, but could he install the Google Voice (GV) app and "somehow" link it to his personal phone number, so the one handset could handle two separate incoming phone calls; work on the Phone app and personal calls on GV app? Would this work? Is this practical or more trouble than it's worth?
Thanks!

I dont see why not, as long as he's willing to change his personal number. Just keep in mind that his work voicemails might go to his GV. That linkage is all kinds of weird.

No, the work calls wouldn't go to GV, but the personal calls might go to the work phone voicemail.

I use GV for my personal number. From the web interface, I tell my GV number to forward to my work cell. I get calls and texts to my GV on my work cell. One key: don't enable GV voicemail on the forwarded numbers. My GV calls go to GV voicemail if I don't answer.

You have to use the web interface to set a few things but if I get a text to my GV number, I can tell it to show my GV number when I respond.

I only use the GV app to dial outgoing and show my GV. But you can completely use GV through the app. I just choose not to.

I've been doing this for a year and a half with no problems. It was a perfect solution for me since I didn't want to carry two phones anymore.

Thanks, a few questions.
Is GV very data intensive when using in 3G?
Do calls get dropped in case of poor 3G coverage areas?
I used GV once or twice a while ago, why does the GV outgoing call show a random number?
Is there some mechanism where GV can mimick (not sure if that's the right word) his personal number, so if a call comes to his personal number, it will ring GV, or must he tell people the GV number? Would that be forwarding?
If he's on a call on the work handset and and incoming GV call comes in, what happens?

Still confused...

These I can't answer, as I have unlimited data and don't need to worry and I live in an area with good coverage.

You're using Google servers to dial the number. You are the only one that sees that number. The person you're calling sees your GV number.

He needs to tell them the GV number. He won't be using the number on his old personal phone at all.

It's the same as getting a second call on the handset.

Why is he thinking about using GV? Is it to not have to carry two phones, or is he thinking of something else? Can he use the work phone for personal use?

The goal is to not carry two handsets. He'd prefer to not have friends call his work number.

GV is definitely a solution for that. He'll just need to give everyone his GV number, unless he can port his existing number to GV. I wasn't attached to my number so I didn't look into porting my old cell number over.

*edit* I guess you can port a number now:

look into the call forwarding feature of one of the phones. google voice is nice if you want to screen calls (among other neat features), but if you're going to answer the phone regardless of who's calling then when why not just forward all calls?

Thanks, it's for a friend and I'm not sure what he'll prefer. He was looking for a solution to the two phones and I suggested looking into GV.
This thread will be very helpful for him.
