[Food] Elk. Moose and Reindeer

Just finished watching a PBS food show "New Scandinavian Cooking" with a very tasty looking slow-cooked roast in a Brandy reduction and served with Cognac Beurre Chantilly. The cook Andreas Viestad referred to the meat initially as Elk but during the cooking also used the terms Reindeer and Moose. Either the cook is just as confused as I'm about the difference or are they really all the same ? I seem to remember that there are some experts on this topic at Team Helix

The cooking show has its own website but I can't find the recipe for this particular episode (Season 4 Episode 10).

I already had dinner (and thought it was safe to watch a food show) but now I'm hungry again.

Iffn it looked like this before it went into the pot it was ELK!

And yes,the chef was probably confused with english as his second language. The 3 are definitely different animals. Ive seen the show also and its a fun watch.

....and why do female reindeer have antlers?

Easy! So that male reindeer have somewhere to hang up their coats!

(No reindeer, male or female were harmed in the posting of this thread)

Could the confusion have resulted from the ... ummm ... process? Somehow?

If that is, indeed, a reindeer; please explain the lack of a red nose.

I paid very close attention to the process: the first use of any ingredient was pouring a glass of cognac for the cook and drinking it.

Hmmm, you might be on to something

Just a tidbit of info about elken. The North American elk is the only animal on the continent with ivory. It has 2 teeth that are commonly called the bugling teeth that are pure ivory. Those teeth enable the elk to make that bugling sound. I understand from a taxidermist those 2 teeth are valuable.

So that's why all those people coming out of my local Elks Club were buck toothed! Hmmm.... if I lay in wait some dark night with a hammer, I could make a killing in Ivory!

Nahhhhhhh..........
