 | gmail address in Yahoo Is there any reason why you can't use a gmail address in Yahoo? I would have thought it would work anywhere. Point is, I don't like the gmail layout and prefer Yahoo, but don't want to change address from my gmail address. |
|
 | No you can't use gmail addresses in yahoo. Domain belongs to google.
Now if yahoo allows pop3 access to you can retrieve your google email and dump it into yahoo. But when you send it will be yahoo email address. |

Have Google forward all your mail to your yahoo e-mail? |

 | Yea guess that would work also.
But I agree with him on one thing. I hate gmail layout and the way they handle the so called labels. What is wrong with true folders? |

Labels are exactly the same as folders, except you can assign multiple labels to a specific email, rather than being limited to being placed in one folder. |

 | Why not do POP3 or IMAP through Thunderbird? If you have a Yahoo+ account you can get that, too.
I don't like Gmail's page, either. |

Every time I go into Gmail I am in my Inbox because that is where I left it, and its all I see unless I look elsewhere.
Even if I get back to the root directory all I see is the available boxes/folders/labels.
Of course if your default is ALL messages then yes you will see everything even recently deleted. ALL means ALL Boxes/msgs. view.
And that is the only time I use ALL is when I accidentally delete something and its not showing in trash. --

Re: gmail address in Yahoo I must be missing something then. I just changed all my label setting to hide and every message shows up in my inbox. Just the label tag is gone.
Have them set in labels as hide in both message list and label list. Still inbox show all 1100+ emails. They just no longer have the label tag included.
If click on one of label it shows only the messages for that label. As I guess it should.
All mail show everything as it should inbox sent mail etc.
Using Thunderbird with Imap get the same kind of results. Inbox will show everything. If I delete said message from inbox it deletes in in matching folder/label and vise verse.
So in short if a message has been sorted I don't want to see it in anyway shape or form in my inbox. This is what I can't seem to get gmail to do for me.

2 edits | You archive a GMail message to remove it from the inbox, which practically removes the "inbox" label from the message. When using filters to automatically label messages, you have the option to skip the inbox which just makes the message appear only in the folder/label you set it to. Labels are superior to folders in that a message can co-exist in multiple locations. That can drive you nuts if you don't understand what is happening. For instance you don't want to delete a message from one folder and think that it will still remain in another. To clear out your inbox, simply archive messages you no longer want to see there. If you have assigned another label, then the messages will appear there. If you have not assigned another label, the messages will appear in "all mail".
By the way, I think you misunderstood the purpose of show/hide labels. When you hide a label it doesn't show up on you sidebar on the left without hitting the more link. You use the feature to only show the labels you want to see all the time on the sidebar. |

| Ok after setting up google apps using a new domain I see what you are talking about.
Was aware what the show hide labels did. But was just hitting anything at that point.
With my very old default gmail account it would take forever to clean it up. I can select labeled messages in inbox or all mail and archive it. This seems to leave the label in place but removes it from inbox. Can't do this from the label level. ie go to label select all then archive them. Thus removing them from inbox.
Thanks for the help. |

| Sure you can. Click the label, then click the select button and select all. It is important to understand that at this point you have only selected the page. To select everything under that label if it exceeds one page, you will see a link at the top of your results which says "All XXX messages on this page are selected. Select all XXXXX messages in ---labelname--- Select that and then all of the messages including those you cannot see are selected. Then click the MORE dropdown at the top and you will see an archive option. |

1 edit | Well gee thanks again. Guess I was just looking for that little archive button.
Edit: Well all cleaned up now.
Now back to your OP thread. |
