3 edits | Leased cable modem fees start soon! OK, I see NYC and other cities getting it. I saw the monthly paper bill today and its notice mentioned the $3.95 leased cable modem fee starting next month! I had a feeling this would come to old subscribers. This was in Los Angeles/L.A. area. |

 | reply to antdude I had just signed up for auto bill pay, so when the bill notification was emailed with the increase afterwards, I got ticked off and removed the auto pay, telling them that they are confusing themselves with Congress (who have open check-book access to steal from us) LOL. I only pay the $19.99 internet service, and wanted to keep it below $21, so I went to their website to look for Road Runner® Approved Cable Modems list, and they removed it! So, it will take a phone call and long wait time if I want to stay with Time Warner in order to buy my own modem. Wish Comcast was available here in Austin - other parts of Texas have it, and it is so much cheaper. I miss the TV programs of cable, but detest the prices, so I bought a Phillips digital TV antenna from Frys and watch the free channels. Model #SDV6122T/27.

1 edit | I did not see a notice about the increase, but sort of expected it. Correction: The notice was in my most recent bill, I just did not read it. It's $3.95 per month now for the Cisco modem. I do have a digital TV antenna (RCA powered indoor type) that will pick up the local PBS station (four channels) plus a couple of others, but I'd do better if I could have an outdoor antenna, I am sure. That's one reason I chose to keep basic cable. Man does not live by PBS alone.
How would Comcast help you? You'd have to move to get it if you are currently in a TWC area. That's like someone who lives in an AT&T area hoping to get Verizon FiOS. I suppose Comcast could buy TWC, but then the rates probably wouldn't go down.
Oh, and the price of the approved Motorola modem I might use is $54.95 from Walmart at this time (new modem), or much higher at Amazon for a new modem. A used modem via Amazon would run about half that including shipping. It' obvious to me that the pricing for leasing the modem from TWC makes the annual cost just less than the cost of a new modem, though more than a used one. This means that I could lease for a year and not lose much money, and if it breaks, it would be free to replace (I've never had a modem actually die, however).
