Well, does your car at least turn into something else? Sometimes I turn it into a trashcan. Hmm...

I'm inclined to say no, as unless you have a mobile version of the Core 2 Quad, it's going to be above the power requirements of what your PC can handle.

Still 10W higher, not to mention the difference in cooling requirements. As far as I know the only Core 2 Quad chips that work in notebooks are the Q9000 and Q9100. However, just because it fits and meets the power requirements doesn't mean it works, it has to be supported by the bios, which unless someone has already tried it, can only be determined if you ask Dell. The fastest processor for the Vostro offered officially is the Core 2 Duo T9550.

If you truly need the speed you should simply get a new computer, otherwise if it's slow, try adding more ram or an SSD.

On a Dell Inspiron 1720 I went from stock 1.83G CPU to 2.2Ghz. Noticeable improvement... Also did the 6Gb Ram upgrade (from 4Gb) (8Gb Ram prohibited not by motherboard, but Embedded display limitation.
I've heard that a T9500 is the highest speed CPU that would go into the Dell Insprion 1720 which I think is same motherboard as Vostro.... You are using the Intel Express Mobile 965 display, right?

One thing..... In order for everything to work here, I believe I had to be runing the latest bios... Which in the Inspron 1720 changed frequently (latest V9 now)...
That had to be in place before CPU upgrade, If I remember....

Happy Upgrading....

Has Mobile Intel PM45 Chipset.
Supports 400/533/667/800/1066FSB

currently got a SSD and 8GB of ram

I think you've pretty much hit the performance limits on that machine. Laptops are designed with tight cooling constraints, and any processor that is more powerful will strain the system, or flatout overload it.

OK That's why you can go to 8Gb of ram.... My 6Gb limit is due to the Intel Mobile Express 945 chipset.
