FRAUD & PHISHING too

But wait, there's more ! (than just DNCL violations)
quote:
....An investigation carried out by the CRTC alleges these companies would contact consumers and falsely warn them that their home computer was infected with a virus.

They would then encourage them to purchase online technical support or anti-virus software, and in some cases even request remote access to the computer....

....at which time the potential for identity theft would be imminent.

Maybe they'll get Bell et al to use technology to block at least some of these fraudsters. They should force Bell et al to fix this!

Who this they, Kimo Sabby ?

I agree that it would be the right thing to do for phone providers to block this shit - at least block the known bad callers.

In recent times, I never pick up my phone unless I recognise on my CID who is calling - and sometimes even THEN....

Sites like »www.800notes.com are very good to learn the identity of many unsolicited callers, and I have managed to avoid having to even HEAR some of the spiels such as the above-posted ones by not answering, and checking there first.

BTW, just who is this AL fellow who hangs out so much with BH#$ELL, and what is HIS part in all of this ?

--

We have only 2 things about which to worry :
(1) That things may never get back to normal
(2) That they already HAVE !

Sadly, some of these arses are BOTH.

Any who are more than simply 'honest' telemarketers should be dealt with under other laws than our already toothless DNC list.

If these scammers get fined and arrested and whatnot, then you can't keep them on the phone for an hour while they mess with a virtual machine that you created to screw with them, eventually getting to the point where you unleash your anger while they pretend they don't know what a scam and lies are.

Either has its merits.

However, I was talking about the virtual machine sandboxing stuff. - Have not done that so far.

Another basic angle on the 'time waste' would be that the longer you can keep such an arsehat 'on the line', as it were, the later he/she will get to [trying to rip off] the next victim - a standard tactic which some folks use on ordinary telemarketers.

Personally though, I'm for reaching thru the phone line and wringing their fucking necks - which is why I don't answer such calls anymore - in case I ever got motivated enough to find out how to DO that, in which case y'all might have to email me in the pen.

So the world bank uses Gmail and Yahoo mail. An they don't even try to sound reasonable like saying you can get $100. No they go all for the $1.5 million so someone can call BS so fast. Unless they want the greedier ones.

OK, so 37 past victims are each to receive $1.5M ?

How come nobody called me when the original scam went down ?!

Is it too late to get on that list ?

The latest scammersa aren't even offshore ... Ontario EcoEnergy.

Pretending they can get you provinicial energy rebates when those programs were stopped by the gov't earlier in the year. They're the latest new daily caller!

Have them add a telemarketing exclusion code to your account. I havent been bothered in years, either phone or by mail.

Even that doesn't work. I contacted the Exec office after being promised it was excluded, but I kept on getting calls almost daily from Bell. I told them that never mind the exclusion code on the account ... they were not to call my number for as long as my name is associated with that number ...

The only 'account' I have with them is the wholesaled landline (via Tek). I guess they think of that as a foot in the door.

Even if it doesn't work (as sbrook suggests) how does one even go about adding a 'telemarketing exclusion code'? They have a dep't for such matters?

Try the ombudsman for Bell.
