No plastic bags in Toronto. It will spread through-out the rest of Ontario. At some point, a massive amount of people are going to die because of diseases that the reusable bags harbour and someone is going to get sued and at which point, the city of Toronto explodes into oblivion 2 seconds before the finish of game 7 of the Maple Leafs vs Dallas game, in which the Leafs had a nice 8-1 lead.

So why don't you guys just use these bags? They even have handles! They also hold about 3 times what plastic bags hold, so you need a lot fewer bags to carry your groceries. Our supermarket uses them (no extra charge).

That's the issue, the bylaw that got repealed, said that stores must offer a "free" alternative to plastic bags, such as boxes or paper bags.

They all decided to go down the route of reusable bags, which you have to wash to keep sanitary, so how is that being green, using more water and detergents?

And it's not even about being "green" anymore, they chains have figured out they can now monetize something they used to give away Plastic bags are a nickel (plus HST), if they bring in paper bags, you bet your bottom dollar the price won't be a nickel , they'll figure some way to make money on that too.

They claim they give the money to environmental causes, but they don't tell you who or how much. The money they used to spend on such causes now is funded by the plastic bag tax instead of being true corporate philanthropists, they passed down the cost of being charitable to us (but they get the tax break).

The city lawyer warned the loony left that they can't pass this by-law and they told her (my words) to pound sand and draft a by-law by November.

And now because they're so fucken stupid, it's going cost us even more money, the Ontario Convenience Stores Association and Canadian Plastics Industry Association , are threatening to take the city to court. I'll admit the latter is being self serving.

And as i mentioned above, this will spread across the country, just the bag tax , that was Toronto Centric only.

Probably because they are too damned cheap to buy bags like that. Why would they when they can ear 5 cents per piece of cheap as pennies plastic bags.

They don't even off paper bags around here...

There's been a steady exodus of business and smart people from the Toronto core for years. That's why there's been as many loony left-wingers elected to council as there has been. They aren't getting any smarter.

I use a gym bag and a ryclable bag I got at Mac Milk for 99 cents. But I do need plastic bags from time to time. I save food scrapes so it can be composited by the city ( I live in apartment building). Also I use them to carry out garbage if I didn't buy these plastic bags I would have to buy kitchen bags.
Way before the bag tax a lot of people I saw bring plastic bags back to the grocery stores. I have seen over 200 plastic bags being brought back every time I went shopping. There is very little reduced in bag usage it just transferred to mostly from grocery plastic bags to kitchen bags or garbage bags. Bag are bags, they all go to the landfill.

Here is the funny part about that, the bags in Toronto are biodegradable. Right after implementing the bag tax, that little nugget came out.
