Prevent MSE Startup Scan

Is there an easy way to prevent the MSE startup scan on Windows XP ? I've spent an hour on Google and this is as close as I could find, but it is not immediately clear how to implement it or whether it would work on XP.

I am hoping there is a reg key somewhere that I can change from 0 to 1 or some similar simple solution. I am not interested in discussing the pros or cons of how MS designed their product, and I would prefer not to install a startup control utility just to delay the program start.
Thanks !

I have MSE on Windows 7 but have never seen it do a startup scan.

What are your Scheduled scan settings?

I'll have to let you know later. I've already returned that machine to the customer. They certainly did not match what was shown in the link above.

I've never seen it do a startup scan, either.

It happens in background. The disk churns and delays the startup of other items, slowing the overall process and delaying the time the desktop is fully loaded. On older machines this will be more pronounced. Read the entire story I linked to for more pro/con arguments about it, and confirmation that it does happen.

I did not just hear about it. I noticed it for myself when I recently started using the product on several machines and then went looking for a solution.

I've upgraded to version 4.1.522.0 (from 2.1.116.0) and the high CPU usage associated with msmpeng.exe (specifically at startup) has been eliminated in my configurations.

That is good to hear. I'll have to check the versions on my machines. I don't think MSE auto-updates the program.
