raylam join:2012-10-09 New York, NY | New to 30/5. Router recommendation? I just started using TWC's 30/5 Extreme, and am considering getting my own modem, the SB6141 seems popular.
When I was on DSL, I used the Netgear WNDR3700 router.
Wondering if I should get that again or if there're different routers more suited to my new connection?
Cheers. |

| I have a Linksys E3200 that I promptly loaded with Toastman's rendition of TomatoUSB. Great amount of features in the release including the ability to track bandwidth usage. Handles the 50 Mbps connection that I have just fine.
Only bad part of the TomatoUSB build that I loaded is that it doesn't have drivers for the 5 GHz card in it so I only have 2.4 GHz WiFi but that doesn't bother me too much. The added firmware capabilities more than makes up for the lack of 5 GHz WiFi. -- Tom Boycott AT&T uVerse! | Tom's Android Blog | AOKP (The Android Open Kang Project) |

|
 | Realistically, no. The only time you'd need a "special" router is if you had special needs (Normally in home networking QOS and other security needs). Most routers are good and fairly easy to set up, and work well for basic needs. I'd shoot for a $70 router if you have the cash to hit a balance between customization and price. |

Are there alternatives to the Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 for the 30/5 Extreme connection? It's so popular it's going for $133.95 now!
Sorry for the questions, I've never used cable internet in my life. |

| You have to follow TWC's approved modems list. If the modem isn't on their list of approved modems, they won't allow it onto the network.

As of right now, they have only approved the SB6141 and the SBG6580 as approved DOCSIS 3.0 modems. -- Tom Boycott AT&T uVerse! | Tom's Android Blog | AOKP (The Android Open Kang Project) |

Depending on what version of that router you have, you can flash opensource firmware to it. Not sure about Tomato, (previously mentioned by trparky ), but I just recently flashed a WNDR3700 with Gargoyle (based on OpenWRT)
The WNDR3700 also has builds of DD-WRT available, as well.
So if you're looking to breathe life into your old router, you could use one of those...but the WNDR3700 stock firmware is perfectly capable for your 30/5 connection. |

| reply to raylam I have the Asus N56U and it is a beast. I had the 30/5 tier with my old router before it got fried and i figured since i could only get about 27 MBits that was it. When I plugged this unit in it went right to 30 -31 MBits, connected via wireless. I could put DD-WRT or Tomato on it but honestly, the factory firmware is great and does everything the open source ones do afaik. It also seems to get updated by ASUS on a monthly basis. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:6 | reply to raylam FWIW, 30Mb/sec is not very fast by today's router specs. My WRT54GL can hit right around 30, and that's 7 years old.
Instead of focusing on the 30Mb/sec, focus on other features - is it 802.11n? Does it support simultaneous dual-band? Do you need dual band? Do you really need to spend money on a router that somebody has tried to shove every conceivable technology into (USB ports, bittorrent clients, etc, etc)?
For me, I recently picked up two Belkin N600 HD+ routers (they routinely go for ~$30 now). It has simultaneous dual-band 802.11n, all ports are gigabit, and I can push 88Mb/sec through it WAN/LAN. Those were the important factors for me. I run third-party tomato firmware on it, so I can't comment on the stock firmware, but I'm sure it's fine.
If you still have the WNDR3700, I see no need to get something new. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

I don't have the WNDR3700 anymore.
I've noticed my connection being quite erratic based on some random speed tests and anecdotal experiences with web pages loading, facebook chat dropping.
Being new to cable connections, I'm just wondering if it's because the bundled modem/router (Motorola SBG6580) and if there're things I can do to get the most out of my connection.
Also now that TWC is charging us for modem rental, I figured I'll look into equipment upgrade. |

 | I have a Motorola SB6141 and ASUS RT-N66U and this combination has been working great. |
|
 | At first with a Netgear cg3000d-RG cable modem/Router combo and RR Turbo, I was getting a consistant 20-30 mbs Down/2 mbs Up. Then, after about 1 or 2 years my speed went down to a consistant 14 mbs/ 1.3 mbs.
The speeds dropped a bunch for me, on Turbo. Not sure why, it is as if they got cheap and decided that the customers were getting too much speed for the price of Turbo. We have the cable package/ with the box, DVR, and with RR Turbo Internet. We have been with the same comapny almost 20 years. It changed hands many times before Time Warner took it over way back when.
I just think it sucks when you ave really decent speeds for a long time and have a good cable modem, and pay $160.00 per month nowadays. Then, they chop the speed way down.
Turbo should give more than 14 mbs down/2 mbs up. IMHO. |

 | reply to RamsteinUSA Uh, how old is that modem? I can't find any specs on it with a few quick google searches. Might simply be time to replace it. |
