Re: [iPhone] Bigger Fail Than Maps ...

There is definitely a status symbol to Apple products but their customer satisfaction simply cannot be merely due to that factor alone - it would be a gross oversimplification.

Case in point: I've had 3 friends buy Android based tablets after I couldn't convince them an iPad was worth it (2 Galxy Tabs and 1 Sony thing) - they all returned their Android tablets and bought an iPad within a month because the other tablets just weren't as good. They all love their iPads now and highly recommend them to other people looking for tablets - but clearly getting one as a status symbol was not the biggest factor to them.

My mother is computer illiterate (she still has an AOL.com email address) and would buy whatever the cheapest computer is for the longest time - but once I got her setup with a Mac mini (several years ago) she hasn't mentioned buying a Dell or HP or some other Windows based computer since. I've even heard her tell her friends "Oh you should just get a Mac, it just works".

People like Apple's products because they're well designed, they are typically very high quality and even just their appearance in a room is pleasing which really can affect people's perception of their devices. That's why we finally sell Dell, Samsung and others paying attention to the aesthetics of their products (though still not as much as Apple does).

Weird. My dad looks at my sons' Transformer Prime and Galaxy Tabs and makes comments about how he likes those and the stuff they can do that he can't. He hates iTunes.

It only makes sense that many prefer non-Apple stuff. After all, 49% of tablet users can't be wrong.

I have an Asus Android tablet. I think it's great - but I think I am more suited for an iPad. Should have bought the iPad from the start.

I was wrong. 48%, not 49%.

The advent of the new lower-priced tablets in late 2011 brought in a new crop of tablet owners. Now, just over half, 52%, of tablet owners report owning an iPad, compared with 81% a year ago. Nearly half, 48%, now own an Android-based device; about half of them, 21%, Kindle Fires. iPad owners, however, stand out from Android owners: they use their tablet more often in general and more often for news. Android users are more likely to use social networks and follow news that comes from friends and family.

The Kindle is a fad? Haha, just wait. The decline is in full force, you just don't see it yet. Kind of like a frog slowly being boiled.

It isn't. Apple makes slick products that work well. They also are highly standardized and designed to be simple--- so you learn how to do something, and it remains constant and works.

People naturally contrast Apple products to Android products because that's the way it exists in the marketplace... but we have to realize that that market isn't anything like the Apple one company-makes-all. It's hundreds of products, many very different in usage, quality, price, and build. The devices are often customized and skinned by the manufacturers and vary in usage and learning curve.

I've used a cheap phone. For the price, I felt it was good value, but it was clearly slow and laggy and a compromise.

I like my GS3. It's a great phone, slick, powerful and fast... I like the large screen due to my big fingers.... messaging on a small phone was a chore.

I also have custom ROMs I use on the phone and I love it's interoperability with my PC. I understand that all this customization is not for everyone, it's extra effort....

I do understand the appeal of the Apple devices. I think they are quality devices that are generally well designed and have a good user experience so I see why they are popular with the general public....

... having said that I believe things like the lightning are examples of milking the public, and I know people who buy the latest Apple product every time they are released.... irregardless of cost or need. I believe this behavior is clearly the status and social aspect in display.

I guess in summation I would say I believe Apple products are good, but consistently overpriced and deliberately lacking key technological features for purely control reasons.... and they have many extremely vocal fans who trumpet constantly about their personal superiority for using Apple.

You have to admire their success in the market, no doubt. Their corporate attitude, however.... no thanks.

So widgets.....
Everything else you mentioned is trivial or actually exists on the iPad in some fashion.

Pretty funny. When Apple doesn't have something, it "exists in some fashion", but when Android works with a device but not in the same way as iStuff, it's an "afterthought at best." Funny stuff.

As for BT sound quality, most of the reviewers say they can't tell a difference. BT audio has come a long way. Well, at least for non-iStuff. Don't know about the Apple things, since they can't even do NFC. I don't expect much.

SD cards (expandable storage). Keyboard and mouse (in the case of my transformer, makes it VERY usable for productivity). Keep your wallet a little thicker.

Personally haven't found a need for more storage that 32GB iPad (had a 64GB iPad 1 and didn't feel the need to stay that big for the 2) - and with cloud based storage it really just hasn't been a need.

I got a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard case for my iPad for charting at work - so I do agree it's a sometimes useful thing - but is easily available for iPad. Haven't needed or wanted a mouse but I do have a stylus for charting more efficiently.

Both my 64GB iPad 3 and 64GB iPhone 5 are consistently full and if not for iTunes Match I would be seriously screwed in terms of being able to carry my media content. With my transformer, I have 32GB onboard, plus a 32GB micro SD and in the keyboard dock another 32GB full size SD.

BT keyboards suck ass with the iPad. I easily out type them and have to wait for them to catch up...not so with my physically connected Transformer dock with integrated trackpad which turns my Transformer into a handy netbook with 14 hour battery life. Worse, no pointing device for iPad, so when you have it propped up on a stand you still have to reach up to point rather than being able to mouse-about. Bad for productivity apps like Numbers, Pages and remote desktop apps. Remote desktop back to a Mac or PC on the 1920x1080p Transformer with a real keyboard and mouse is pretty sweet.

I wish a serious dock system was available for iPad like the one available for the Transformer, nearly as much as I wish the Transformer would run an OS other than horrible Android.

You should check out the Logitech keyboard - I easily type between 60-90wpm on it without lag.

I should add you carry around a LOT of stuff if you're filling up to 96GB worth of media cards! I guess I just keep a work-out music playlist on my iPad and a bunch of PDFs and other work related stuff and then stream movies over Netflix & Hulu, so 32GB is plenty for me for now.

I have a Dinovo Edge and out type it with ease. On Mac and PC the Dinovo is great but BTKBing sucks with the iPad. I also tried a couple of my crapbox BT keyboards, an adesso and some Fry's junk I can't even remember the name of, all them them pause randomly and I have to stop and wait. And even then, without a desktop pointing device, the iPad is still limited for productivity (which is why I have a Macbook Air).

I like the TF's ability to be a tablet or a ultrathin 14HR netbook. If only it didn't run such a shitty OS, it would be awesome. Too bad Microsoft won't license Win 8 RT for non-OEM devices.

I really expected a 128GB iPad this go around. 64GB doesn't cut it. I keep lots of movies and TV shows on mine for watching when I'm at the gym or stuck waiting for something.

Wifi or tethering at the gym FTW :-P

That 128GB iPad has to be coming sooner or later.

Would be interesting if Apple did allow for a mouse on the iPad - Would make it more of a laptop replacement for many.

No wifi at my small gym...I use Clear's unlimited WiMax for 8-12Mb service. $50 and truly unlimited, at least until Clear goes bankrupt.

Yeah they didn't have wifi at my for the longest time - used the 3G on my iPad or tethering from iPhone for the longest time. That's why I was so happy to see tethering made part of the family share plans!

I actually use a Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad 1, no joke. It works perfectly, although I've had to "discover" which of the modifier keys (Control, Alt, etc.) had which function on iOS.

When it comes to input lag and other weirdness with the keyboard, I've found almost every time that it comes down to the app I'm using. QuickOffice, for example, is completely unusable with a BT keyboard on the iPad 1 due to massive input delay. DocumentsToGo, on the other hands, works great. The WordPress app used to get extremely laggy once you'd typed more than 3 or 4 paragraphs but I haven't had that problem with the latest version(s) of it.

I've done a fair amount of word processing on the iPad with this keyboard and it's mostly been quite acceptable.
