Using the Samsung SMT-C5320 with an IR Blaster

Yesterday I picked up the new Samsung SMT-C5320 Cable Box from Cablevision and spent about 3 hours getting it to work with Windows Media Center and my IR Blaster which is used to allow Media Center to change the channels on the set top box.

Hopefully this post will save time for anyone trying to perform a similar set up.

There are two key points you will need to know to make this work:

1) The Samsung box provided by Cablevision uses the same IR codes as the Scientific Atlanta cable boxes. It does *not* use the Samsung IR codes. Cablevision must have specified this when ordering the boxes from Samsung. So when telling your Tivo or WMC or other DVR software which box you have, you will need to specify Scientific Atlanta for the correct IR codes to be sent.

2) You must position the IR blaster sender in the exact right spot on the Samsung box in order for the signal be received. I was pulling out (what is left of) my hair trying to get it to work. Finally I stumbled on the correct position. You need to place the sensor just below and to the right of the letter "G" in the Samsung logo. Just hold it in that general area and move it around a bit until you find the exact spot where it works correctly.

I hope someone finds this beneficial!

Good Luck,
Andy5000

Update: Having a problem. The Samsung box seems to switch itself off sometime during the night so I am losing recordings.

The SA box had a feature where any IR signal received would turn the box on if it was off. The Samsung does not have this.

If anyone has any clues as to why the Samsung box turns itself off, please let me know.

CV has been doing work overnight and rebooting the boxes.

Thanks for that info. So far I'm not really seeing any advantage to this Samsung box over the S.A. box...

In fact it seems slower to me.

hopefully you can help me the SA box had a switched power outlet in the back which my muffin fan was plugged into, it would go on and off with the cable box. the new samsung also has a power outlet but it is always live. do you know anyway to make this rear outlet a switched outlet?

i find using the switched outlet as a convenient way to turn on/off my LED room lamp remotely.
except of course, when it suddenly turns of for 15-30 seconds, then back off after a software upgrade between 3am and 4am.
