[FireFox] Firefox and Applications
I regularly use FireFox. I have the latest stable release. When I get emails with attachments for Word and PDF, for example, I get the annoying box that pops up and says what do you want to do with the file. I always have it set to open Adobe Reader by default and I check the box to tell it to always open those files by default. Same for Word files. Yet, every time I get any of those files to open it keeps asking me what file do I want to open with. Not to mention, it has to "download" it and open up the download window. Anyway to stop it from doing all of this?
From your description, it appears that you are checking your e-mail via Firefox from a web page (google, yahoo, msn, etc). In that case, whenever you get an e-mail with an attachment, firefox does have to "download" the file to your computer each time, as all your mail is on the remote mail server (not local on your computer). Just like with any other file that you can click on with a web page, you have 2 choices: Open it or Save it.
In the "Open" case, Firefox still has to "download" the file to your local cache directory before it can perform that action. If you notice, in the dialog box for "Open", it probably lists the application that you have setup in windows as the default for that file type (Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, etc).
Once the download is complete, the file is opened in the application selected.
There may be a way to modify the settings of the options on the General Tab so that it does not ask you every time, but I'm not sure. If there was a place to modify it, that is where it would be. I know how it works when you want to download a file, but in this case, you want to open the specific file all the time without being asked. That may be the setting you want to change, but I'm not sure. I always have that option set to "always ask every time", with the "default" location being my desktop.

Probably want to check Tools > Options > Applications in Firefox and look for the document type and choose what you want in the drop-down box. I suspect most are set to "Always Ask". Need to change them to a specific application that can view them or a specific plug-in to view them directly in the browser, such as the Adobe Reader Plug-In for PDF files.
