Kid control via router?

I have 3 kids..they love to download junk. I have a limit of 150 gigs per month. now how do i set up my router or what software do i need to alot each one a certain amount that they can download for the month? I would love to set it up so each one gets 25 gigs per month and then stops or blocks them or warns me when they go over. any help would be gold! thanks

You'll need more than the average consumer router pfSense, MicroTik, EdgeMAX (I believe it's a new product I haven't used yet) should all be able to do this for you.

Thanks for the input..I'll be checking them out

Okay, do recognize all those products are meant for WISPs and similar medium-scale deployments and are substantially more difficult to setup than SOHO routers (I can't speak to the EdgeMAX since I haven't used it, but the others...)

I would recommend something simple like Opendns... you would need to sign up with them...

Can you explain to an old man how OpenDNS would impose individual download limits?

It doesn't and it can't.

The OpenDNS idea is fail as is any idea that relies on trusting any client side configuration. I thought of a different approach than setting individual download limits. Try putting the kids behind a transparent squid proxy. You could set it up to filter certain object types that tend to be huge files, such as. ISO, .flv, and .exe. you could also filter sites such as torrent sites. That way they can have the net all month without running up your bill or being shut off by a cap. You could also make it cache to overall reduce their bandwidth usage, as well as have it deny access at bedtime hours. This approach can block them from getting viruses, as well as break their bandwidth mongering habits. Most kids would have no clue about GBs used in their daily routine, so this approach addresses the problem more effectively, IMHO.

I wish it were that simple ( however it doesn't really sound simple lol) I currentl;y have the router set to block torrents, and shut off the internet in the house at 9:30pm during the week..the proxy might work except that they are very aware of proxy sites..actually I used to get calls from the schools cause they were using proxies to bypass the screening process on the schools computers lol..they were still on facebook and twitter even though the school had them blocked. the major thing they use the connection for is gaming..and the rule is you need to ask before you download..I have one that lays there and just streams movies all night..he swears he's not downloading anything just streaming LOL sigh..and then i check the amounts used and I have mysterious gig usage every now and then..considering nobody is supposed to download without permission how do i get 15 gigs downloaded in 1 day ..mm hmm must be the "mystery kid" you would think there would be software for issues like this..better home control, better control in a small office etc..??

You could install uniFi and impose limits with it but it isn't really plug-and-play easy, much like the mikrotik, pfsense, untangle, etc. options take some effort.

ok... So if your situation is as such than you might want to look @ WCCP in Cisco World or WebSense in Juniper
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Cache_···Protocol

in the business world you cannot get around the WCCP as the router that is attempting to route the traffic will force the WEB to go to the proxy and this is Independent of the client.

Dear Friends,

One solution if there were a spare pc, as router, run WCCP on a linux box, similar to what DGK said.

Setup is not for the faint of heart, but any distro with the WCCP module in the kernel will work, using apache traffic server.

(Would I do it again? God, no, I would spend the cash to buy a commercial router.....)

A simple google brings you to »trafficserver.apache.org/docs/tr···.en.html, which, were it a no smoking advert, would stop a three pack a day man.

My instructions, a few years ago, for apache traffic server, wccp, were somewhere around four pages long. And I am no geek.

Thus, apt-get install trafficserver, then, grab six-pack.

Best,
M
