Mounting a 3/8 inch female fluid video head to 1/4 fat gecko

I would like to get a fat gecko to video a car trip. I was thinking of using it as a tripod (to avoid baggage fees and to avoid buying a monopod) as well with a 701HDV Manfotto Video Head. The video head has a 3/8inch female thread the gecko is 1/4in male.

Although a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter sounds like it should work, I am convinced the torque while panning will loosen up the adapter. If there was a locknut involved, it would not loosen up.

What kind of adapter should I look for?

Myself I would just use loctite on the threads instead of a lock nut. (you put the commas where you want them)

They make 1/4-3/8 bushings especially for this use- the typically have a slotted top so they they can be tightened well. Here are some: »www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_···+bushing

Re: Mounting a 3/8 inch female fluid video head to 1/4 fat gecko

I am pretty sure those will come loose as I pan the camera back and forth. I have been doing some research and I think I need something called a converter plate, but I cannot find one that accepts 1/4 male on one side and has a 3/8 male thread (stud) on the other.

Here is what I mean

Unless I am mistaken, the devices you pointed out are to adapt a thread on a camera to a different kind on something fixed like a tripod with screw or a quick release plate.

In those cases there is no torque on the adapter until you are dismounting the camera or camcorder.

Not sure how all that fits together, but could you use a lock or star washer to secure the bushing or assembly? If not enough headspace, use loctite to secure it?
