Connected laptop to TV via HDMI.

laptop screen stays on even when viewing it via my 1080p 120hz 42" TV

to 2 displays are going, the TV and the laptop's

i use a wireless mouse/keyboard... the laptop display responds instantly... however the TV display lags behind noticeably... and makes using the TV impossible

The TV does a lot more signal processing than your computer monitor. Most monitors will have a slight lag, typically 5ms or less while the TV can be as high as 30ms. This is why you see the mouse cursor lag.

Some TVs have a game mode that will greatly shorten the processing time by not processing as much. You will have less video options to tweak, and thus slightly degraded video quality, but the lag should be gone.
