What do you recommend I do? What happens if I do nothing?

Over time your battery will be worn on so to speak.

Battery is to start the vehicle, filter ripple during run time, and provide boost current when needed.

Alternator goes on the fritz, the battery has to pick up the slack. The extra work might mean it isn't able to charge enough during the run time so problems develop.
