| Storing Steam games on an external drive I have an external drive with USB3 and another with eSata, I'm wondering what kind of performance loss (if any) I'd be looking at by running my games from an external drive.
I'd also be interested in moving my library from my Desktop to my laptop. Is it possible? Is it a good idea? Your thoughts? -- Support Bacteria -- It's the Only Culture Some People Have |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:8 | Yeah. It only has space for one internal drive, so I opted for a 120GB SSD boot drive, and slide the 1TB external into a space in the laptop cooler beneath the laptop, so I can still pick the whole thing up and move it as one piece of equipment.
When I'm on the road, I have this setup ritual where I connect the USB hub, the laptop cooler, HDD inside the cooler, the mouse, the headphones, and the tether to my Droid so I get free internet. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

You generally can move your steam folder around without a problem. I have had steam for years and have it on a separate partition and moved it around to different computers without any problem. Some games in steam might have issues, but all the games I have never gave me a single problem. |

I've done this on internal drives, I wanted to make sure that USB3 was fast enough to deliver a good gaming experience, all sings point to yes so far which is good, because I have limited space on my laptop, but I just got a new 3TB USB3 drive. -- Support Bacteria -- It's the Only Culture Some People Have |
