[speed/latency] Spratic high pings

I have been experiencing varying high pings lately. Here is a trace:

C:\Documents and Settings\Roy McNelly>tracert verizon.net

over a maximum of 30 hops:

9 119 ms 83 ms 61 ms 206.46.232.39

Trace complete.
My former problem with slow downs at night is still here, but I can survive that. I can log on a steam game with low pings (95) and in a couple minuter it will spike to around (800). I have rebooted my actiontec modem/router several times with no help. At times internet browsing will slow to a crawl. The verizon station is about a hundred feet from my house. Thanks for any help you can give me.

edit: Just ran speed test and got 511 ms ping, .44 download, .22 upload. Thanks

could you post up the line stats to look at. if i remember right, it's at »192.168.1.1/status.html
this would help in determining where the problem lies

if that's not it, then a quick search around this forum for "how to get transceiver stats from actiontec modem" should help.

Thanks for the answer. The site is 192.168.0.1. I assume you are referring to the status page. It is as follows: Modem Parameter

Status
Firmware Version:NCS01-1.0.8
Model Number:GT784WN
Serial Number: xxxxx
WAN MAC Address: xxxxx
Downstream Rate: 7616Kbps
Upstream Rate: 768Kbps
PPP User Name: N/A
ISP Protocol1483 via DHCP
Encapsulation:LLC
Modem IP Address: xxxxxx
DNS Address #1: 68.238.96.12
DNS Address #2: 68.238.112.12

Does this give you and clue? Hope this is what you need.

Thanks.

well, although not the page i was looking for, it does give me a clue. your upstream rate should be 864, not 768, to accommodate for overhead. what modem are you using?

for westell (6xxx and 7xxx), it's »192.168.1.1/htmlV/transtat.asp

for d-link see here: »[modem/router] How to get the transceiver statistics with D-Link

for actiontec: i forget, eventhough i used to use one a couple months ago xD

hmmm, your line seems really odd, provided all those numbers are right. your snr (noise ratio) seems to indicate a problem, yet the power levels and even moreso, the single digit attenuation, seem to suggest otherwise.
i'm thinking you're experiencing congestion issues from an oversold router somewhere, and you need to be put on one that's not so clogged. as for how to do this, i would recommend posting in »Verizon Direct

as a side note, if it's available in your area, your line should be more than capable of doing 15Mbps down, and with fastpath too.

i will say to take what i say with a couple grains of salt, i rarely see someone with a line with as low of attenuation as your modem is saying you have.

Thanks for the reply. For some reason the problem seems to have cured itself this morning. Do not know if it will continue to work properly, but for now. I also have a problem that during high peak usage hours my service drops from six megabit down to one megabit or less. They gave up on on that problem. I always figured they had oversold their capacity to service. Thanks for the information. I will hope for it to stay cured. Thanks for trying to help.

glad to hear the issue is resolved, eventhough how is unknown. as for the peak hours speed drop, that is congestion. is congestion fixable, yse, but only if you get to someone not stupid who can switch you to another router. something you might also want to do is change dns to »www.opendns.com/business-solutio···enefits/. i've found that sometimes "congestion" problems during peak hours are caused by isp dns servers being slow.

I wish I was getting your low ping rates. Starting Nov 6th 2012 my connection started getting high ping rates.

my ping rate to verizons gateway (10.29.11.1) was around 32ms before Nov 6th.

now I'm getting 40ms ping rates when the connections working good during the day and at night I've seem my connection at 200000ms ping rates with a 98% packet loss. at times the latecny it so high I can't even authenticate.

I've been on the phone with verizon constantly since the 6th of nov and they have pretty much moved me to a whole new dslam and router. The problem seems to be getting much worse since the changes.

Here's a quick sample of my ping rate to verizons gateway at noon when my connections working

PING 10.29.13.1 (10.29.13.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 10.29.13.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=127 time=40.4 ms
64 bytes from 10.29.13.1: icmp_seq=9 ttl=127 time=41.3 ms
64 bytes from 10.29.13.1: icmp_seq=10 ttl=127 time=40.8 ms

--- 10.29.13.1 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 3 received, 70% packet loss, time 9001ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 40.487/40.883/41.342/0.388

It sure would be nice if Verizon would fix this.

I think Verizon has a lot newer firmware upgrade for that router.
