| [DVR] External HD noise I have external eSata hard drive on my DVR and it has been working great. However, recently it has started making a 'whirring' noise intermittently. The noise starts 2-3 time an hour whether the we are watching TV or recorded program. The noise usually lasts about 20 seconds. Never did this before.
Any suggestions ??

| The noise is the external HD spinning. No fan in the unit that I know of. |

I'd take this up with my eSata drive vendor. It's not a Verizon problem. |

| Possibly but it acts like the DVR is accessing the external HD on a random basis. Under 'normal' use of the external HD, there is virtually no sound but once or twice an hour, it sounds like the HD spins up for a few seconds and stops. I confirmed the spinning sound is the external HD |

Does your esata enclosure support "sleep mode"?
Im not sure if the Verizon DVR enables sleep mode for inactive HDs but my PC's esata enclosure will sleep my drive every 30 mins when not in use and it then will spinup (making the noise that you notice) when I access it. |

| I don't know if it has a sleep mode or not. It is a Western Digital 1TB unit and it was essentially plug and play with the FiOS DVR. No configuration needed. It never did make this noise until a month or so ago. |

The DVR is continuously accessing the active hard drive. Whetrher you are watching, recording, or doing nothing. That is how it maintains a one hour buffer for each tuner.

Nope, by default it records to external HD until full then goes to internal, no changing it. |

As was said it defaults to external.
If you eject and disconnect the external drive it will revert to internal and you can always reconnect the external drive without loss of recordings. A pain in the butt but will cause the internal drive to be active.
