Re: Router Replacement? I just got FIOS installed on Saturday. 50/25 and they gave me a rev F. Which according to the chart is 65Mbits max. I am getting low 30s over wireless (and 58/25 wired).
If I got a newer rev would it make a difference in terms of download speeds? I am in an apartment and can see 15+ other wifi connections. I have tried channels 1,6, and 11. I think I settled on 1 as it was the least congested but not by much.
Or is it just because all the other wifi radios? |

If you used WiFi Analyzer or a similar program, you should be able to see what channels are have "interference" and which ones do not...
In the US we only use 11 of the 14 channels of the 2.4GHz frequency, so you can change it from channels 1-11 as you like, to which ever channel is the most "clean". |

There are only 3 non overlapping channels in the US, while there are 11 number channels only 3 don't overlap with others
With that many networks, not a chance you'll do much better unless you get a 5 ghz band router ( which Verizon doesn't have ) |

| So on G/N the non overlapping channels are 1, 5 and 9? If so I will double check and see if 5 or 9 is better. I do have Wifi Analyzer and Channel 1 seemed to be slightly less busy but all were pretty busy. |

Channel 5 overlaps channel 6 and channel 9 overlaps channel 11.
As guppy_fish  said, your best bet is to get an N router and set it to use the 5Ghz band only. You'll find less congestion in the 5Ghz band.

1 edit | 1, 6, and 11 is what I thought and tested. I have a nice Asus RT-16 running Tomato (not hooked up) but it isn't 5Ghz either.
I have multiroom DVR and didn't think any of the multi router options made a lot of sense for me. I guess either I will have to do that or just live with 30/25 on wireless. Which is really ok.
I have a Netgear WNDR3400 at work I could try (it is 5Ghz).
