Video card to replace 4870?

What's a good card to replace this one with in the next month or two? My budget is about $300 or $400 max.

You will be looking at

HD7950 (higher core speed seem to have higher price.. )

GTX 670
»www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi···TX%20670

HD7950 vs GTX 670
»www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=598

HD 7950 will get full DX 11.1 support
GTX 670 will get you physx(remember only if the software supports it.) and only support DX 11.05.

I'm planning on going to the 7870 as soon as I get the cash.

The price will be dropping below $200 very soon.

By the way. I think you should get the one with 2 or more fans. 1. less noise. 2. These gpu(both company) have gpu boost aka like turbo boost.

I use Gigabyte GTX 670:

and overclock it. =D

The Gigabyte 7870 is a quiet card for something with 3 fans. As soon as a new motherboard comes in, I will have two crossfire.

I just put in a GTX 680 last night and it's been running quite well so far. The 670 is quite close to it in performance. The 7950 is a good card as well. I had a 7970 for a few months but replaced it due to persistent driver issues I was having with WoW (my main PC game).

Definitely some good options in that price range .

Pity I prefer nVidia though.

If you are in the market for a GTX 670, Tom's Hardware tested a bunch of them and this one came out on top:

I personally went with a Sapphire Radeon 7970 3GB (the Vapor-X variant) this time around. In my mind, Nvidia provides more refined graphical prowess, but AMD offers raw power, and especially pulls away at resolutions above 1920x1080. Since I run 2560x1440 + a second monitor, it was an easy decision to make.

It seems the 670 edges out the 7970 in 2/3 of tests. Add the nVidia would be better in movies etc and I'd be happy with that card. I am a nVidia fanboy though.

The latest beta drivers from both providers shakes things up quite a bit. Let's say the 670 is no competition for a 7970, with the 7970 blowing past 680s, especially at resolutions higher than 1080p.

There was a less-biased source of this comparison out there somewhere, but someone started a thread on this one. Frickin' Canucks man.

A friend has 2 x 7970's in SLI with twin screens and suggests the improvement with the new gen cards as well with the new drivers has settled a lot of bugs and in his words 10 - 30 % improvement with one of his more favorite games having large improvements - something the link mentions, a few games see a lot more improvement than the "general over-all improvement".

Still won't deter me from nVidia, but the AMD/ATI offerings has always peaked higher and offered more in games than the nVidia options for the same price, so these results do not surprise me at all.

Although I find HWCanucks OK at times, their editorial stance on stuff is, uh, pro-corporate to say the least...

The main site admin was opposed to the CRTC decision that maintained wholesale Indie ISPs in Canada. His readership rightfully raked him over the coals for it, but, the bias was still there for all to see.

Late reply but I won't be doing any multi monitor setups.
