Rodent Crate spawns a Rodent Battle pet. You must battle and capture the pet it is not a loot thing. So make sure you are appropriate battle pet level before using.

Ok then sounds like these commendations aren't all that interesting.

Now does hiring those NPC's do anything for you?

forces horde to fight something in order to recapture the buff areas.

They're not interesting, but I do turn them in to get the druid/mage/priest buffs.
