Not new news, but still disturbing...

How to get targeted ads on your TV? Try a camera in your set-top box.
A set-top box could push ads based on what it sees and hears in your home.
by Casey Johnston - Dec 3 2012, 4:45pm MST

Intellectual Property122 Verizon has filed a patent for a DVR that can watch and listen to the goings-on in your living room. In the application, the company proposes to use the technology to serve targeted ads appropriate to whatever you’re doing in the, uh, privacy of your own home—fighting, cuddling, or hanging out with your cats.

Or serving targeted ads aimed directly at your cats. Which, all of us here (except the cats) would agree, is going entirely too far...

/sarcasm on

I'm sure Verizon would never dream of capturing data and sending it back to their servers. And Bob wouldn't be able to access the data either.

/sarcasm off

George Orwell's 1984 (published in 1948) had TV's that could spy on you. Guess he was off by a few years.

Well the difference, even with all the monitoring we have now, is that private conversations etc within ones residence have not been subject to monitoring so far--at least not without a warrant.

The problem with technology like this is twofold IMO.

1) People become accustomed to it just like they have with internet/phone monitoring. The "coolness factor" should not be discounted.

2) While video/audio might not be sent back to the provider with initial versions it will occur over time. The rationale for such a change might be technical but once in place it'll become the norm and it's "game over".

Also if this does become the norm all TV's will contain cameras and microphones.

If it means I'll no longer hear about getting 5 suits for the price of 1 at Joseph A. Banks, it can't be all bad.

Well totalitarian societies have some advantages. For example the trains run on time. And you don't get Joseph A. Banks ads.

I will accept Joseph A. Bank more than having a condom ad sent to my your grandchildren just because they were snuggling together on the couch!

the patent office should reject these. They have no use other than invasion of privacy.

Naturally of course if ever exploited the devices with the monitoring will have it in the contract. in the 1pt font that you allow Verizon to monitor your room.

Rejecting the patent does not stop use of the invention. It may encourage further use since others can now do the same without paying money to Verizon for a licence (and they can presumably consult the rejected patent application to get tips on how it's done).

I still have not determined what is in this proposal that benefits the consumer, other than the reasoning that custom advertising is good for the consumer! Have we reached that reality?

Well if you watch TV in a nice suit you may not get the Joseph A. Banks ads which might be of benefit (e.g. to dave See Profile). On the other hand perhaps they'd try and sell you more suits.

That said this is all about targeted advertising. Or putting it another way getting the most bang for your (advertising) bucks.

BTW Google (and others) already use targeted ads based on your location, web searches etc. Verizon just wants the same for TV.

I will get one for a bathroom TV and see what happens. This could be fun! Drying off with a towel could be interesting. And away we go!

Does this mean if someone does a home invasion while you are watching TV and you blow the bastard away with your Colt 45. you will get an ad for ammo?

Oh as long as they do not partner with MS and have Clippy popup..

"It appears you need to hide a body, would you like suggestions?"

Just be sure the camera picks up the perp actually threatening you... or else that same camera may get you penalized by the cops for unnecessary roughness. It may also serve to route you good trial lawyer ads in case they do.
