Don't ever give your social security # for something as trivial as a cell phone.

Whats the big deal about them checking your credit history? You do realize if you switch to another carrier and get a post-paid plan, they will also do a hard pull on your credit. I have had At&t since 2000 and never had any problems like this. They did not do a credit pull when we added a line a few years ago.

a simple dispute on the equifax report will clear the issue.

Someone making a big point to insure that a credit check was infact not going to be done likely threw up some red flags.

I don't know if I would call this an outright lie, more of an uninformed store rep. I doubt they have a button on the screen that says hard or soft credit......
