Advice on upgrade from 3G to 4G

Verizon 4G has become available here. Need some advice on what hardware changes I need to make to upgrade from 3G to 4G. I am currently on the Millenicom 3G Advanced Plan so guess I'll change to their 3G/4G Hotspot plan?

My current 3G configuration is:

1. A Cyfre CA-819 Dual Band (800 & 1900 Mhz) amplifier/antenna plugged into a
2. Novatel U760 USB modem which is plugged into a
3. Cradlepoint MBR1000 router to which is connected
4. An Ethernet wired 3 PC LAN and USB NAS storage device

Can the Millenicom Novatel MiFi Hotspot modem be connected to the CA-819 antenna and/or the MBR1000 router?

The Cyfre can help you on the 3G side but not the LTE side ... that frequency (700 MHz) is out of the range of the CA-819.

The MBR1000 cannot connect to the Hotspot, only the newer Cradlepoints have that capability (WiFi as WAN)

Jim, found out the Hotspot Novatel MiFi 4620LE modem provided by Millenicom doesn't have any wired (Ethernet) connectivity and you say it cannot connect to MBR1000 so that pretty much rules out Millenicom if I decide to upgrade to 4G. :-( Thanks for the feedback.

The 4620LE can connect to the newer Cradlepoint routers using WiFi as WAN mode. That will give you the Ethernet ports you need.

The problem is that a MBR1200 costs $250. Seems like overkill just to solve a connectivity problem. Odd that Millenicom doesn't offer an USB modem for their 4G plan like they do for their 3G plan. Especially since Verizon does.

You don't need a MBR1200, a MBR95 will work fine and it's around $95

Further, there have been a number of eBay sales of the MBR95 at well under $95 recently. Of course, one runs a certain amount of risk when buying used equipment...

Or again, a Sapido router will work. I have 2 in my home. The big one (RB-1732) reaches down to my uncles house. It is very easy to use as a repeater (AP Wifi mode).

I had the exact same setup as you do for 3g, when I switched I sold the MBR1000, got the Sapido's and havent looked back. So much easier to configure.

I got an MBR95 refurb on amazon for $45. Has worked flawlessly so far. Just another option to check out.

I am guessing the existing Cradlepoint USB would not have proper drivers to support the 4620L's USB tethered mode.

no tethering via a cable ... only wireless

Not only wireless. I meant turn on USB tether mode on the 4620L and plug that into the Cradlepoint. Looks like it does not work at this time, thought it wouldn't, end of this article talks about it. Maybe it could be planned for support or has changed since the article was written, didn't do additional research.

Forgot to add, you can also get an unlocked 4G usb stick from Ebay or wherever and move the sim card from the hotspot, but that's also buying more stuff, would probably be better off buying the new router.

Bummer, Hltrancher, thought you had found the magic bullet. That article kinda sucks. It got my hopes up then dashed them at the end.

"What about routers? Many people have asked whether the MiFi 4620L can be tethered to a router. For now, the answer is NO - we tested it and it does NOT work with any routers via tethering (you can of course use it with routers that support WiFi as WAN by connecting it via WiFi). However, since it is possible to tether the 4620L to a computer, it is certainly possible that router manufacturers like Cradlepoint could add support for the device in a future firmware release."

I'm still ponder what to do. Really hate the thought of ditching my much beloved, reliable MBR1000 and/or Millenicom. :-(

Like Hltrancher says, you can buy a UML290 modem (supported by your MBR1000) off eBay and swap the sim from the Mifi to it. The only additional piece of kit you need is a sim adapter to interface the Mifi sim with the UML290. They don't use the same size.
