China tightens 'Great Firewall' internet control

And the noose draws tighter for some folks: China tightens 'Great Firewall' internet control with new technology
quote:
...A number of companies providing "virtual private network" (VPN) services to users in China say the new system is able to "learn, discover and block" the encrypted communications methods used by a number of different VPN systems.

China Unicom, one of the biggest telecoms providers in the country, is now killing connections where a VPN is detected, according to one company with a number of users in China.
It doesn't matter if its encrypted when the information simply won't go through.

the "Great Firewall" system is blocking at least four of the common protocols used by VPNs

...IPSec, SSL, PPTP, and... ? Someone able to fill in the blank for this?

Regards

Choose from: DTLS, MPPE, MPVPN, SSTP... ? A lot depends on what was meant by "common" protocols.

Thanks for posting that article, as it certainly sheds some light. In the last couple of weeks we've been dealing with the effects of this but did not know what was going on. Certain users located in China have been losing the ability to connect to our SSL VPN, and we've been rotating ports on the average of every 24-48 hours (even trying ports 80 and 443). They eventually get blocked every time, but other traffic on those ports can still go through. At first I wasn't sure what was going on but now I think this article makes it very clear.

@banditws6
...well that confirms SSL, but I agree with Blackbird about the "common protocols" the article author was referring to.
