Re: Replaced the Impala Got a 1997 Buick LeSabre myself that I've had for the last 7 years, my great uncle owned it for 9 years before that. Best 5 G's I ever spent. It's an old man car alright but other than doing regular and some preventive maintenance the thing is bulletproof, and of course it helps that my uncle took care of it too. It has 280 000 km on it and other than a little rust at the rocker panel (mostly drivers side), the V6 3.8 has been absolutely troublefree and the tranny is still shifting like new. All good things must come to an end though and in a couple years I'll be picking up something else, perhaps a 3.6L Cadillac. |

London, ON | the CTS gets ok reviews, but the new ATS gets very good reviews...it's only issue is it can get pretty pricey when optioned up...being a GM, it might actually be a great buy in 2-3 years since it won't have the retained value many of its foreign counterparts will have, enabling a very good car for a pretty decent price. |

Yep. I would buy used, something around 5 years old or so. Don't want the dime a dozen 2.8 though, a little underpowered IMO, so the rarer 3.6 would suffice. My great uncle that I bought the Buick from has the 2.8, I wouldn't hesitate in buying a car from him again but like I said I'm just not interested in the 2.8

Yup, awesome motors. The LeSabre that I have has the 3.8 Series II and I've been told by people in the know that if you take care of them they'll go forever.

Halifax, NS | I noticed the engine bay is much larger in the Buick then it was in the Impala. I can change the rear bank spark plugs (near firewall) without rotating the engine towards the radiator as I had to do on the Impala...
Apparently the engine bay is larger for a reason... The 5.3 litre V8 300hp was an option as well as the 3.6 litre. Actually the 3.6 makes more horsepower then the 3.8 240hp vs 200hp... But the 200hp is more then enough for me... |

the 3.8L only has 200hp??...what are they doing to neuter that engine??...the 3.8L V6 engine Hyundai uses in the Genesis has 348hp (for the coupe, 333hp for the sedan)...i realize the Hyundai unit is DI, but that is usually more about efficiency that actual output...that 3.8L in the Buick should be putting out more than 200hp.

The 3L Vulcan V6 I had in my Topaz was only good for 180HP if I remember correctly. Same pushrod design and all. |

i realize that, but this car is a 2008 model, not a 1996 model.

155hp...the 3.0L 24V V6 my 2000 Taurus had was rated at 200hp and 200 torques...that is the same hp as this 2008 model 3.8L...that's pretty sad.

The 3800 is a 12 valve pushrod engine. It's the same engine, except for very minor upgrades, in 2008 as it was in 1988. Seriously. It's old.
That 3L you had in your Taurus wasn't a Vulcan. It would have had to be a Duratec. The Vulcan only had 12 valves, though like GM Ford used that engine from the mid-80s well into the late 2000s because it was a solid beast that worked well. The Vulcan in my Topaz would have only been rated for 140hp, for some reason I always thought it was more. Even the late-2000s Vulcans were only good for a bit more hp than they were 20 years earlier. |

London, ON | yea, my Taurus had the Duratec V6...and it isn't just this engine...Ford still uses that 207hp 4.0L V6 dog in their Ranger forever...they make a 305hp 3.7 V6 (used in the Mustang), yet still use that old dud in the Ranger. |

Heh, just noticed - Windsor and Essex. Go figure.
Edit - the 4L was the Cologne. The Windsors were V8s. And the Essex was 3.8L, not 3.5. |

so old gm built it as a low buck replacement for a V8 in the 60s. they sold the tooling to AMC and eventually bought it back. there were oilpans stamped with the AMC logo into the 90s in 3800 gms |
