 | New FiOS Installation So I just had FiOS TV and Internet installed in the Boston, MA area, and I just realized that a BPON ONT was installed (Telabs 612), in my basement. It appears based on the FAQ, that this ONT is pretty much outdated and for exterior installs only? It also seems odd that Verizon wouldn't want to future-proof their installs and use a GPON, even though I'm only on the 15/5 tier at this point. I also received an Actiontec Rev. F router, which is also apparently out of date. Apparently FiOS must not be so popular if they have all this old tech still in stock!!! |

That was when I did when they issued me a very old Motorola DVR. They exchanged it. Your issue is different than mine, but I believe you were offered a 30 day satisfactory trial of FIOS before you are actually billed. Just state that you want the equipment updated or you will remove the service.
In the end, it is your money that will be spent on the old rented equipment. Best to take action now and try and remedy it before you are actually billed. |

 | Are there any technical concerns with this ONT being installed inside? I'm assuming the tech didn't feel like installing it outside during a massive rainstorm Other than that, I'm not overly concerned at this point as the web / TV service is running flawlessly. |

That being said... I also wish I had GPON

 | Good to know! Are you using the Gen 2 Rev. F Actiontec router? |

Rev.F isn't so bad either. With 15/5, it will handle your wireless devices plenty fine.
No technical issues with inside install. At most, access for repairs will require you or other responsible person to be present. On the plus side, it is secure from outside damage. |

 | Yeah..I actually connected an AirPort Extreme to get gigabit Ethernet and 5 ghz 802.11n, but then I remembered the actiontec rev f doesn't support gigabit. Guess it doesn't matter for LAN transfers anyways, as they wouldn't be going through the actiontec, correct? |

 | It happens every year at this time. They don't order as much equipment to cut back on spending at the end of the quarter.More than half the equipment being installed now is refurb stbs, and routers. It sucks, but there is no guarantee you will get the newest equipment on an install. 612 onts are still being installed everyday, outside unit installed inside is ok,can't put an inside unit outside.if you order a gpon service they will provision you at the c.o., and will swap out the ont. Call and tell them the router is power cycling and they will mail you another, you might get lucky and get a newer one. |

| reply to mike12806 Mine is inside -- even tho these devices are rated for use outdoors, I"m sure the electronics is much happier in a cool dry place --- I'm about 300' away from my tap on the pole, so the engineer had to go to the next county over, to get a 500' drop cable. He cut off the end, when he dropped 20' of extra cable outside my house (tech would use splicer to put the proper end on the cable, during install. With the end cut off the cable, I was able to feed it thru an already-drilled opening in my house, vacated by the old Verizon land-line. (I have Vonage). I was able to pull the fiber into my basement. ------- I put up a 3/4 inch plywood board for Verizon to work on, near the point-of-entry. When the install-tech arrived, I just pointed to the fiber, laying on my basement floor. He installed the ONT on the board I provided; I even put a 110v outlet on the board too. I was issued the standard warning about someone needing to be home, if the equip needed servicing. |

 | reply to mike12806 Traffic on your internal network (all devices connected to gigabit ports on the AirPort Extreme) would not be routed to the Actiontec so you would get gigabit speeds. The AirPort Extreme acts like a switch as well as a wireless access point. |

 | reply to mike12806 That's interesting.
We had FiOS installed in early April. We're north of Boston, but the tech was from the Dorchester depot. He said he got sent our way to meet install demand.
He installed an Alcatel O-211M-E in the basement (that's an outdoor GPON ONT, if I recall correctly). We also got an Actiontec Rev. I router. The ONT and router were brand new, still in the boxes when the tech brought them inside. The Cisco STBs were new as well--still with protective plastic on the front panels.
Maybe they were out of the new stuff at the time, since I'd figure Milton installs would be scheduled for techs out of Dorchester. |

 | Oops! Need to update my profile, Install was in Newton, MA.
If you don't mind me asking, what internet tier are you on? I just upgraded to 50/25 but I'm only getting 28 Mbps on almost every speedtest for DL... |
