DLINK DAP-2553

Just wanted to let everyone know I recently purchased this Access Point and so far absolutely blown away. The coverage is far superior to any home router/AP I've used. Figured I would finally buckle and get a nice access point and so far I would suggest this to anyone. Multi-SSID, VLAN, WDS, ETC. I no longer have the need for 4 of my DIR-655's as AP's as this beast covers it all and more. I may purchase a second just to try the WDS aspect. For $150, you will not be let down. Similar options and quality as some high end Cisco $1,000 AP's I've seen with controllers.

Cheers!

Are you running it on a PoE switch or using an injector? Been trying to find a descent PoE switch but the price is over the top. Found injectors for $40 instead.

What injector?

Just a standard DLINK Injector, in reality any injector should work long as it supplies 48volts.

Here is one here, says it's gigabit. Far as I know when running on an injector you are limited to 100mb. Not sure if that has now changed ( I need to do some research).

Can't speak to the one you linked, as I have no experience with it but there are gigabit PoE injectors now.

With this being an AP only, 10/100 is plenty. I have yet to see 2.4 wireless N speeds over 50Mb/s anyways.

I configured two of those to spread four SSIDs on separate VLANs into an unwired space using WDS for a couple months about a year and a half ago, and it worked pretty well.
My only disappointment is that they cannot do simultaneous dual-band.

Honestly, I haven't seen any do dual band properly. I've had too many issues with 5ghz to bother. Working on 2.4 I haven't had any issues.

It's a different model, I did it a year or so ago, and I am no expert, so I don't think I can help you. But I'd definitely say to try to get just two to work first before attempting to ramp it up to 5. Can you get two reliably linked? Are you using the best channel with the least interference in the area?

Apple's Airport Extreme Base Stations, the last few models with dual band, work extremely well and are easy to set up with WDS, have an isolated guest network functionality, etc. And the 5 Ghz works top notch. They don't do multiple VLANs or have enterprise management capability, or I'd still be using them in my school. But I still use one at home.

well determining the the best channel is kind of hard since WDS does not support channel switchingng, do yo have an alternative to finding the best channel?. i just wana know how was your WDS set up, coz Dlink AP's tend to have the same config interface.

Channels 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap. Try and do a pattern of those channels. For instant, you are putting three up in a customers location. Front one near reception would be channel 1, middle one in shop would be channel 6 and last one in warehouse, channel 11. If you need up to 5, the next one should be channel 1 again, then channel 6 again. Reason being, your two AP's on channel 1 should be far enough away you shouldn't get interference. With a business grade AP, I would say a good 300+ feet between the two that are going to be on the same channel. I haven't used WDS as I only have one, but this is just standard practice for any wireless setup.

Just wanted to do an update. Noticed every 2 weeks I was getting connectivity issues. I also recently built a new Hyper-V box to handle the extra load and growth. Figured it was my domain controller VM, which also handles all my DNS/DHCP requests. Rebooted that virtual machine and still issues. Ended up rebooting the AP and everything came back. Figured it was a one time deal, until it did it again 6 days ago. Turned off all the logging, ensured all the QoS and extra features were disabled and it did it once more. Upgraded the firmware to the following:

1.27 10:19:30 10/19/2012

It's been running for about 5 days now without issue, so hopefully the firmware fixed the hanging issue. Anyone else with the same AP report what firmware they are running and any similar issues?

The most recent firmware is listed as 1.25 on dlink's website. Could you provide a link to the 1.27 firmware.

Will do! Here's a screenshot until I find the exactly location of the firmware.

Thanks for the link because I did a google search and didn't come up with anything. I will update my units and see how it goes.

Just make sure you hardware version is A1. You can check on the bottom of the unit. Just double checked mine, and it is A1.

Update: 12 days still no issues. Hopefully the firmware fixes the lock-up issues.

FYI, I turned off all logging on the AP. I did this before the firmware upgrade, and it still stalled with all the logging turned off. I've seen AP's lock up with an excessive log file size so to be sure I turned it all off. Don't think it was the issue, though.

Well, after 17 days it's done the same thing again. Just starting my troubleshooting and so far laptops can connect fine, however any smart phone or tablet cannot. It appeared to be a DHCP/DNS issue, so I logged into my domain controller and everything there is working perfectly. Anything plugged in also works good. Typing this on the AP on my macbook air without a hitch. It's seems to be a bit glitchy once in a while but still functional. Like I said, laptops work fine, however Iphone's, Ipads, Android phones and tablets won't connect fine. They won't get a proper IP. I've eliminated the actual DHCP not function properly. I'm going to continue troubleshooting and see if I can find anything before rebooting the AP.

Up Time 17 Days, 15:15:53

It stopped working within the past 4 hours.

Anyone else been having this issue?
