History of the Browser User Agent string

If you read this article, you'll realized the the idea behind Browser User Agents has been completely destroyed.

»webaim.org/blog/user-agent-string-history/

The worse of all of the User Agents is...
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.2.149.27 Safari/525.13

Hmm so Opera should add "Presto" somewhere in its UA string.

...but only when identifying as itself, of course.

That was a great article.

Some of that was necessary during the early browser wars, where Microsoft had some interesting strategies while trying to gain market share, such as inducing artificial delays (timeouts, password failures, etc) in Microsoft's IIS whenever a Netscape browser was used as the client.

Netscape fought back, doing the same thing with their Server, locking out/delaying Internet Explorer clients.

The solution was on the browser side.
