 First start the optimization wizard.
Next, Choose GIF as the format
From here, you will be taken to this screen, basically a summary of your settings. Choose "customize" to tweak them.
Depending on the complexity and amount of colors used, you want to choose the amount of colors that will yield the best result. I find that with avatars you never really need anything over 63 but if you can squeeze 127 and remain under the limit you may as well. If available you are best to go with "Optimized Octree" which uses 8-bit color.. usually fine for avatars. When deciding between "Nearest Color" or "Error Diffusion" it comes down to more of what the final product looks like. In some instances it will be one and some the other.
Unless you're dealing with a transparent picture, all of these can be checked off.
Finally , this screen will tell you how much you have reduced. The first column being the size of the original image and the second being the size of the newly optimized. For DSLR this size must be 5.0k or less. Hit finish, and Viola!

 | You can also just click Save As to save an animation. It will prompt you to the exact same window where you input your optimization settings. |

 | reply to Joey B Very nicely done. One quick question, you said quote: Unless you're dealing with a transparent picture, all of these can be checked off.
Which ones change when you do have transparency? |

Every little bit helps. I've been playing with PSP and Animation Shop for a little while, but having it all written down for me sure cuts out all the trial and error that I usually work on.
PS I LOVE Cadbury Creme Eggs (not the caramel ones though) |

This is the kind of prompt you get when dealing with transparencies. |

| reply to Joey B Thanks joeyB, all info like this is greatly appreciated! BTW something to think about wish there was a way to convert some of these great tutorials to PDF files or printer friendly. The info shared on this site is better than any book you can get. Rowdy [text was edited by author 2002-03-18 20:55:08] |
